Sunburned!
Okay everyone..
Went to the lake this past weekend...wore an SPF 45 sunscreen from Banana Boat and still got my ass fried Does anyone have a good recommendation for a better sunscreen? I would really hate to end up looking like George Hamilton..

Hmm really? 45 and you still burnt.. try a higher SPF maybe 60? How long were you out?

or maybe applyiung it more often? it does wear down after a bit but SPF 45 should have gave you at least 7 hrs protection..

You probably missed parts. Very easy to do if you're not particularly careful. One application, if applied thoroughly, should have protected you for a number of hours, enough to take you right through the day providing you didn't get wet unless you were out there from dawn to dusk.

You are supposed to apply sunscreen at least 10 minutes before you go out in the sun to let it sink in before you start sweating/swimming it off (I put it on before I leave my house...feels kinda greasy but, oh well...sit on a towel to keep from getting it on your seats ). You may have gotten some good sun exposure (through your car's windows, etc) on your way out there and as you were applying sunscreen if you didn't have it on prior to leaving your house (you may have already set the stage for a burn).
Some may consider this a waste of product, but I reapply every 2 hours regardless of whether I've been in the water (sweat gets rid of the sunscreen, too...if it's a cool day, I don't feel a need to reapply as often) and try to stick to the shade as much as possible...Keep in mind that while sunscreen may last several hours, it doesn't completely block out the sun's rays (if you're already burned, sunscreen won't save you the next day). I STILL get darker (too dark) throughout the summer and get really *cool* (ha!) sunglass and swimsuit lines while slathering on the sunscreen.
I also tan in a tanning bed prior to lifeguarding (if you plan on spending massive amounts of time in the sun anyway, you might want to consider this)...those of us who go in with base tans don't fry our first week out. The people who go in white can't seem to help it, no matter what they do.
I use Hawaiian Tropic with an SPF of 45...the brand shouldn't make much difference, but you could give that a go.
Children's sunscreens go highter in SPF and a lot of them have a tint that fades so you can make sure you've covered yourself completely. I've heard the alcohol-based (spray and gel) sunscreens dry you out so if you have dry skin, steer clear of those.
Anyway, that's what works for me...haven't had a sunburn since I was 16 and I got that in a tanning bed because I was too anxious to get a tan to do it slowly.
If you continue to have problems, they make prescription sunscreen. My sister is really white with freckles and used to get severely burned within 20 minutes of being out in the sun. Her daughter is the same way. A prescription helped a lot. Since then, she's found that slowly working on a tan in a tanning bed keeps her from burning as easily in the sun, too. She, of course, has to really limit her daughter's time in the sun until she has a bit of a tan.

bets thing to help ease the sunburn is white vinegar
learned this in EMT class
the sun burns out the acids in your skin
so adding white vinegar helps bring the PH closer to normal
supossed to help it much quicker

That actually DOES work. My mom used either white vinegar or apple cider vinegar (normally the apple cider vinegar because it smells a tiny bit better) mixed in with my sister's bath water when she got burned (can't remember exactly how much).

Jeez, how did you burn with spf 45? I dont even use sunscreen when I tan and it takes me HOURS to burn. I also live in Arizona, where it is already over 90, and we are on our way to 100s in no time hehe.
Im not even that dark, but I think my skin is used to the sun since I lived here all my life.

Fools. Chuck any factor sunscreen on any animal you want (preferably hairless) and chuck em in the oven for three hours. Provided they don't explode, they will burn. Sunscreen is the biggest fallacy known to man. Best way to avoid sunburn - cover up.

No uv rays in an oven
Actually when applied properly, sunscreen works - and it works damn good.
It would be on the contrary one of the best inventions of man rather than a fallacy.
You can't cover up and hope not to get burned either. Even with a foreign legion hat your face can still be burned by the glare even if no direct rays are hitting it. Same goes with other areas such as throat area, hands, where ever is exposed.

This is the exact reason why I hit the tanning beds around March/April......get that base tan going and you will not have this problem.
