Most humans got owned by the virus... hense most places became empty.. Wild animals stay away from human enviroment but since everyone was gone, they obviously shifted out of jungles, forrests, zoos and started moving into the cities.

The cities etc. lacked normal day to day life, so places like NYC become more "wild" with all the crops, grass, trees growing..

The lions are from the Bronx zoo. There's a whole family of them.

there was alot of symbolism in that movie.. I'm pretty sure the butterfly symbolized hope.

To answer your question + what jassdolly pointed out, not everything was shown... Not all the bridges could've been taken out.. also water levels might have fell which allowed them to get to nyc...
