Practicing on grass or on carpet is the best approach. Also you want to have strong calves. This is at times ovelooked because a runner will have enomous quads/glutes/hams but if your calves aren't proportionately strong enough to absorb the enormous forces being transmitted through the balls of your feet your body will adjust to a heel strike to prevent injury.
Also it is 100% myth that elite sprinters run 'light' (click myth for article).Last edited by viperjax; 01-01-2010 at 11:54 AM.

I agree with the running on the balls of your feet. Also paw at the ground like your trying to pull it towards you with your toes it will keep your feet light and help you get them back of the ground quicker.

+1 for barefoot running...if not then at least in a pair of minimalist shoes
Also, loud runners tend to be quad dominant or 'push' runners, whilst quiet runners tend to be hamstring dominant or 'pull' runners...get that posterior chain stronger with Glute Ham raises, Reverse Hypers, Deadlift variations (particluarly RDL and SLDL).Lift.LOL.Learn

Running barefoot on some turf for extended periods of time will strengthen everything from the top of your legs to the tips of your toes and forces you into the natural heel strike and into a pronation. This in the long run will make you a stronger runner with a natural motion once the shoes come back on.
