Doable, but more ethical to use a bigger caliber.

They say you can use 7.62 Soviet for deer hunting, but even that would be on the lower end of what is considered a humane kill. I wouldn't think the .223 would prove very effective.

better check your regulations to make sure it is legal to hunt with such a small caliber. In my state you must use at least a .25 any rifle under that in wv is illegal.

.223 might not even be legal like one guy said, check your laws.

Why use that though? Its really is a marginal caliber for ethical deer hunting. You'd be much better served with a bolt gun or at least a different ar upper in a larger caliber. I own an AR but never saw the point for deer hunting with it. YMMV.

I guess i would have to get a .308 AR then. Well like i said before i recently bought a bolt action 30-06 and i really want an AR and can't afford it, so i was thinking about selling the 30-06 and getting the AR if i could hunt with it.

30-06 is a classic deer round and capable of taking down anything in North America. I'd definitely keep that gun.

in my state 55grains and up is legal for deer. With anything, shot placement is key. 223 will be fine

I know people that kill with a .22 rimfire. Just earhole the deer and it's lights out.

And how many times do they wound/miss/never recover a deer?

That's an incredibly small target to aim for.

Never man, who misses a shot with a scope? That shot has to be taken <50 yards but its a sure kill everytime, deer is dead before it hits the ground.

I've busted one with a .17 before. Anything centerfire is legal in my state.
Also I've hit 2 consecutive does in the ear with a .243 in like 3 seconds with a bolt action.

My biggest gun is a .264 mag and my dad used it to killed a large mule deer; and I've killed an antelope at 300 yards with it.

Someone already said it, but shot placement is key.

Someone already said it, but shot placement is key.

unfortunately, not everyone is that good of a shot lol.

Damn you must be a hell of a shot but I dont know a real hunter that would use a 22 to hunt deer even if you can kill them it just isnt ethical in the sense that if you are slightly off the deer will be wounded but you will have no chance of recovering it

I personally would keep the 30-06 and just save a little longer until you can afford the AR.

If a 5.56 round could one-shot a 225 lb human, I don't think you should worry about it being an effective 140lb deer round.

However, if you are trying to drop it immediatly after a shot then a .30 caliber would make more sense.

Honestly, I think you're really exaggerating. Especially the 3 second back to back head shots.

    Anyways:

Deer brain is about the size of a large walnut. If you can always hit something that size without a gun vice/bench setup then honestly you should look at getting into some Olympic qualifiers. On the odd chance you're not bending the truth - more power to you, that's quite impressive. However 95%+ aren't going to be able to consistently nail such a shot under field conditions. Stick with a better caliber and go for the larger vitals (lungs + heart), IMO.

probably don't know what i'm talking about... but you wouldn't need to hit the brain directly. the bullet traveling though an adjacent space will rupture blood vessels and oscillate the surrounding tissue, damaging or destroying the brain even w/o direct contact

In VA, the minimum is a .23+ caliber.

If you are really interested in an AR, you can get a Remington R15 in .30 Remington AR and an upper in .223/5.56mm so that you can hunt/plink.

My two older kids killed several of their first deer with a .223, my middle kid still shoots with a .223 WSSM, and my 5 year old will soon kill his first deer with the AR15 if I have my way this season. My sister hunted with a .223 for 10+ years and killed tons of stuff, even got 2 deer with 1 shot accidentally when she was really young. You hit anywhere in the heart/lung/liver area and the deer is dead, you hit it with a 30-06 in the guts it'll go just as far as hitting it with a .223 in the guts.

i've killed deer with a .22-250 before, anything centerfire is legal here. BUT you can't hunt anything with a semi auto rifle.

I killed my 1st deer with a .223 when I was 8 or so. The poor thing didn't die right away and I had to track him. I felt pretty bad about it and used a .270 the next season.

I've had to track most of the deer I've placed perfect double lung/heart shots on with a 7mm rem mag.

The recommended minimum for deer is 1000lbs of kinetic energy. The .223/5.56 can't make that except on the very thin edge of insanity with very heavy projectiles and pressures that make manufacturers wince. There are no commercial rounds available that come close.

If you went with a 6.8, that is about perfect and you would still have a combat rifle if needed. I personally view rifles for hunting and for combat as two different things but if there are budget constraints in place - a 6.8 spc ar variant would very nicely fill both roles and would not cost more than a .223 if you built it yourself (if you can do a brake job on a set of drum brakes, you can build an ar).

I have personally killed several hundred deer with the rimfire .22s. Highly illegal and generally considered unethical but I never had to track a single one. The statute has long run as I only did that when my family was dirt poor so I am not in any fear of prosecution. If you have the skills to know where the deer will be, the patience to sit it out and the restraint to only take the shot that will produce a gauranteed kill, then any weapon that will penetrate into the cranium is sufficient.

NO, I would not recommend a .223/5.56 for deer. It is too small and too weak of a round.

They always run away with a vital shot. If you mean you had to track him down and shoot it again then you shot it in the wrong place the first time.

As do I with the 300 Weatherby mag I hunt with, they always go 40-50 yards, same as they do with just about any other caliber. It's all about shot placement.

I've known people to take out a deer with a .22 here in MI. I took out a deer with my AR last year, shot it right in the head from about 80 yards, dropped like a lead weight. It's all about shot placement. If you are going with a smaller caliber, you need to be a lot more sure about the shot you're going to take, and it's lethality.
