    Women's Gyms

I am studying to become a personal trainer. However, I would be most comfortable working strictly with women.
I am just wondering if that greatly limits my opportunities. I know there are many women's only gyms out there. However, it seems that they are all the lower end. I haven't found any top end women's gyms in the New York area.
    Thanx!

You can work at any gym and let them know you specialize in women's training, and that's all that you prefer to working with, during the interview process. Personally I think being a niche trainer, even in a chain gym, will get you more clients. Good luck

Being a niche trainer will get you more total clients....IF you are willing to train outside of your niche.

Just wondering why you want to only train woman? - not having a go just wondering.

It really depends how you market yourself - if you make out that your a specialist in women's training then you'll prob pick up most women that want to be trained in that gym to be honest - of course that will depend on what other female trainers they have in the gym - which is something you need to look at before signing any contract.

I think working in a male and female gym and marketing yourself as "a specialist" in women's training will bring you more clients - other than trying to work in a women's gym which is already marketed at specialising in women's training......

I used to train both male/female but now I only train women--I'm 5ft and I find it hard to spot heavy military presses etc.. with 6ft clients! (even if I can lift the weight myself)

You have to make sure if that is what you would like to specialize in--make it apparent. Get courses on pre-post natal training, have women only workshops on exercises and nutrition, do women only bootcamps etc... Be the person that is THE only trainer women want to train with. I would stay in a co-ed gym though as the total female members will most likely will be higher (at least it is in my area)
    Good luck

Dunno about where you are, but here Down Under the fastest-growing chains of gyms are the women-only gyms - Fernwood, Curves, etc. I see perhaps 3-4 times as many advertisements for PTs and gym instructors for those places as general places.

I don't know what they're like to work for, but the opportunities are there.

Where exactly in NY are you?

Like 90% of the clients seeking PTs are women...

It's because men think they know everything already, or that enough sweat and grunting means everything will come together perfectly regardless of lack of plan or good form or whatever.

Because men are typically more stubborn and think they can do things their own way and don't want to believe that they need someone else's help.
I do snatch pulls in the gym so I can do snatch pulls in the bars. And I ALWAYS use a hook grip.

You don't need "high end" gyms to make a profit. Low-end gyms operate on volume and that is a very successful business model.

Men do know about fitness than women, on average. They are also more capable of training themselves since they are not adverse to physical exertion, unlike must women.

Always defending sat. fat, low-carb, high-protein, machine training, isolation exercises and "broscience".

Bodybuilding has been advanced through anecdotal knowledge. Studies are over-rated. Experienced BB'ers understand training far better than scientists.

I've always had the belief that if you want to be where somebody is, then do what they did...the real experts are the ones that are in the gym getting the job done. Those are the people that you need to listen to. – Dave Tate
