Hrmm well I don't disagree. Its the perfect size I just can't work with the handle. I considered getting those TKC scales for it to extend the handle but they are 50+ alone. I'm gonna try the laser strike out instead if this thing sells. Down to 75 if anyone wants.
Also, saw this guy on reddit, his video is hypnotic and the money he has sunk into knives is amazing.

Do any of you guys know anything about Damascus? I know its essentially a hand-forging manufacturing technique, sort of the way swords are folded, and I know it leaves an amazing looking grain to the steel, and I know its suppose to hold an amazing edge.
the reason I ask is because I'm looking for a knew fixed blade camp knife for hunting trips and backpacking, and ive been able to find a TON of amazing looking knives on ebay. beautiful stag-horn and brass stacked handles with scrimshaw and amazing looking damascus blades, 7" long, full tang, for under a 100$.
All of these steels have amazing ratings like 4145 and ctm20. Before this new obsession with these knives I would of paid a decent price for 4145 spring steel in a full tang, provided it had a solid handle and a blade shape I liked.
I would think something with bison horn and spalted maple handles would be worth more than 60$, but it really seems ebay is flooded with damascus steel. You can tell the difference between the fake laser etched bs and the legit stuff. This stuff looks really legit.
Could this manufacturing process take a piece of 4140 and turn it into crap? If so, why would they slap a handle that belongs on a 200$ knife on it?

I mean, c'mon, how is this thing NOT worth 40 bucks?
I won't be bidding, the bid ends in 40 MINUTES and it starts at 17....this could be yours pretty damn soon for under 20 bucks...whatcha guys think?
I have no experience with damascus, is this chit going to snap or something?

What is Damascus?
Damascus, also known as 'pattern welded steel', is the result of combining at least two different types of steel to achieve a certain functional quality or to achieve a desired aesthetic.
How is it made?
I begin by layering three different types of steel, each of which harden and temper in the same range, into a 'steel sandwich'.
The 'sandwich' is tack-welded together and put in a hot forge, where the steel becomes "plastic" and "sticky."
The 'steel sandwich' is then placed into a hydraulic press where the steel molecules actually move back and forth across the layers, fusing and bonding the steel together.
The result is a single billet that is stretched and manipulated to create desired patterns and/or a desired layer count-sometimes reaching up to 10,000 layers.
Damascus vs. Straight Carbon Steel
Damascus has a more complex creation process and requires more time and concentration; it tends to represent more of my soul. It constantly allows me to tap into my creativity to produce a unique art piece that is also a high performance tool for your kitchen. Damascus simply has higher level of artistry.
Similarities: The shape, balance, and design of my knives combine to give you the best performing tool possible. Both sharpen exactly the same way, get equally sharp and I believe they cut the same.
Differences: The difference is in how they wear. Since the Damascus blades consist of different types of steel, each layer of steel will wear at a different rate. This causes a very fine micro-serration, which can help to keep the edge sharp for longer.
Why is it more expensive?
As you can imagine, this process is very labor and material intensive. In some cases, up to 70% of the material is lost while achieving a desired pattern. This is why my Damascus knives are much more expensive than my Straight Carbon Steel knives.

1095 and 15n20 steel? I'd take a knife made out of either one for 30 bucks frankly. I dont see how blending the 2 together could somehow be bad provided the heating, hammering, and quelching were done decently. I don't doubt the tremendous amount of crap on ebay, but either one of these is a steal in my book for the price. I'm leaning toward to petter's.
I'm ashamed that I almost broke down and bought a Sog Jungle Primitive.

man, you got me backpeddling now......my bx has the whole line of Sog jungles for half of what the MSRP is. I have a penchant for bone grips and leather slings and sheaths though, I'm just a purist like that. It seems a lot chef's have a strong preference for it, however, the amount of money they are paying is worlds away from 90$.
Seems the damascus out of Japan is what you need. For what its worth, the most expensive benchmade is damascus, thats a company I certainly trust and if they feel it justified to attach a thousand dollar price tag to a no-frills 4 inch folder certainly there must be something to it beyond it looking pretty.
Edit: I think i'm just gonna do a bit more cursory research on welded blades and bite the bullet, worst case scenario I just end up with a show piece that dulls quickly, best case scenario I get a thick haft of heavily worked steel that holds an edge for a long time.Last edited by JohnnyDestroyer; 04-29-2012 at 09:09 AM.

OK PEOPLE! now you have all convinced me to look deeply into getting the ESEE IZULA II for my next knife and my first fixed blade. All i want to know is when do you guys all use them, where i should order from, and what color i should get?? I want to use it for when i go fishing, hiking, biking and camping, idk where the heck to order from, and i really like the orange blade. ALSO, should i get the kit, the scales or just get the knife and wrap it in paracord?
On a side note, i also would like to invest in a sharpening system, but have 0 knowledge on anything and everything sharpening so please let me know about that as well!
Thank you

the knife connection is a real popular for esee fans to buy from and his prices are competitive if not better than most. You could also just keep an eye on the sale/trade forum of the esee site. izula 2s don't come up often from what i've seen but sometimes. regular izulas are common.
I don't have one myself, I have a hest and I carry it as a pocket knife. As for what color izula, i'm a fan of the gray one with a black cord wrap"I'm not like most girls." -most girls
