Actually you can. I've had a few models with QC issues that I've returned to my local knife shop.
I like Benchmade but I would never buy any of their stuff without putting my hands on it first.
I only trust a small group of knife companies to that degree.
To each their own, I've never had a problem with them, I've always bought the blue class. I've snapped blades in half prying on them and benchmade never questions me, they just replace it in a timely and free manor.

I carry a Sog Flash II most of the time, I did order a CRKT Ignitor thanks to this thread, lol. Can never have too many. I also have a couple other misc SOGs/CRKTs but the flash is my fav. Ignitor looks nice, so we'll see.
Just went back to the first page and watched the video again. Looks like I'm gonna have to give this one a try.
How tight is the thumb stud spring lock up? It looks really smooth.

CRKT should give me a commission for this
BTW gerbil I have two of them, a plain edge and a serrated, the spring tension is a little stiff but nothing obscene and it's quite smooth, after i opened it 10/20 time's I didn't even notice it.
Also, the serrations work really well on this knife and they're actually very easy to sharpen, which I find it to be a nice plus
also his relatives here isn't too shabby either, I got one of these for late Christmas
It's a little big for EDC, unless you like a 3 1/2 inch blade for that role.

just got the knife in the mail.
the thumb stud will give you a little bit of resistance. its fairly tight out of the box, i hope i breaks in better.
the spring assist could be a lot stronger, that or the pivot point needs some polishing action. even with a generous application of clp i find it stalling about 2/3 of the way open every few times.

Loosen the pivot point a tiny bit.

yeah, gotta find my torx drivers. the g/f borrowed them and of course put them back where she thought she found them. which isn't in the driver drawer of my toolbox....

the pivot point does tend to be a bit tight when you first get it so some basic tuning should clear that up, I did that and both of mine open very solidly.
also the thumb stud will break in over time fairly well,at least on both of mine it did.
As far as lubricant is concerned I use Brian Enos slide glide grease as opposed to oil, best lubricant I've ever used, bar none.
BTW If you're worried about picking up debris with grease don't be, I've used this to lubricate just about every gun and knife I own, no adverse gunk built up whatsoever.

the blur is a good x<100$ knife. assisted opening grippy handle easy to carry.
the normal steel they use on the blur isn't really that great of a steel but it's good for the price. if i were to go for a blur i would get one with ZDP-189 steel. that steel is very stainless .. has very refined grain to hold a super sharp edge and will hold the edge for a really long time.
the only problem i have with the blur is it's a linear lock. it would be just fine under normal conditions but not under hard use.
if you decide on getting the blur and want it in a super steel like zdp-189 let me know i will tell you where to find it.

I've never really understood how a liner lock would fail under hard use unless you're trying to cut with the spine or stabbing it into wood.

I agree, I've had lots of liner locks over the years an never had one fail doing standard everyday tasks, though I can see them failing if you're doing something such as you describe here.
I can see maybe not wanting a liner lock if you want your knife to double as a self-defense weapon, though I think there are a few liner locks out there tough enough to facilitate that, such as
great knife IMO
still though to me that doesn't make a lot of sense because if you are carrying a knife for a weapon wouldn't you not want the blade to lose its edge by having it do a bunch of EDC tasks?

I got a Benchmade 42SS at a gunshow on Sunday for $110. I thought it was just the regular 42, and it would have been a good price for one of those, but apparently it's a limited edition one. I guess I made out pretty well on it.

a good linear would be fine under normal use just not hard use. linear locks on most knives are not all that strong . only 2 inlinear locks i would trust is spyderco and zt. most people wont have a problem with a linear some do and it closed on their hand.
I have a couple of cold steel liner locks that have been put through hell. They are retired with no failures. Chunks and tips missing but only because I snapped off tips to make screwdrivers or cut into something with a claw hammer as a backer that I knew would take a chunk out of the edge. They are plastic knives too.

they may be plastic but the liners are steel. like i said a good linear would be ok the blur is alittle on the weak side. i perfer frame locks or axis lock myself.
Just got a benchmade griptilian 551 for my brother's birthday (for him), He wanted a dark blade with serrated, I was trying to convince him to get straight and satin finish, but it's for him. 100$ at REI. Here it is along with a few of my other folders. I LOVE the vulcan (left of the 551), and I got the flash 2 for my dad. Can't find my damn'd seal pup elite right now.
here's pic:
edit: sorry pic too small.
Also, before it's mentioned, yes, I do have a carpet under my keyboard. feels good man.

I would imagine that with multiple openings/oilings it should break in and get a bit smoother. You may also want to try some other type of lubricant such as Tuf-glide. Either way let us know how it loosens up, if at all.
As to liner lock failures, I have heard/read of occasional failures with hard use but it was mostly due to some minor twisting of the blade and/or handle in the users hand which then disengaged the lock. I've never actually experienced any issues with my liner locks and I tend to use my knives quite a bit.
I honestly feel that the failure rate is not a matter of routine with well executed liner locks, but as a matter of safety I tend to prefer a titanium liners over steel due to it's tendency to maintain a 'stickier' grip on the steel of the blade. I also prefer frame locks to liner locks ala the Sebenza.

I picked up a Scallion at Gander Mountain yesterday. Sucker is nice... and sharp...
$40 knife turned out to be expensive. I was sitting in my car, knife dropped out of the package into my lap, and I instictively closed my legs to keep it from falling. The knife sunk is about 2". 5 stitches later, and the aftermath is in the attached pic. It's not horibly gory, but bruised up right nice. Before I got the doc to sew me up, I could see fat cells. I'm quite impressed with the knife though.

dayum, good thing you missed the artery, could've killed ya pretty quick. Looks like a cool knife (not a fan of liner/frame locks though :P ). Did you look at the kershaw Shallot?

I was pretty damn lucky. It was the Scallion for sure.
