Go to Walmart, In the hardware section they carry a drywall repair kit. Costs like 10 bucks. You will need to paint over it though. If you bring a solid paint chip slightly bigger than a quarter they can match the color and mix you a quart of paint for about 5 bucks or so.

I just told my parents, because I couldn't really cover mine up (halfway up the stairs). However, you can just put a large potted plant in front of this whilst you replaster/repaint it.

yeah, i looked up spackle and it said it wont work on holes larger than fist size, well i punched it in with my fist... so... not sure if it would work
and i have no posters at all, so i cut out the rock band emblem from the box, and put that over it... yeah..

clean out the damaged sheetrock. then you press mesh tape up and spackle. then your gonna have to repaint that area. no way around it. if you can find the same can of paint that was used you might not need to do the whole wall
the mesh tape is basically fabric screen that the spackle can grab onto and form a stable layer to replace the missing wall
