    Lifting in heels.. really?

    Lately I?ve seen videos, and pictures online of women doing squats in high heels. What is the point of that? It looks like a broken ankle waiting to happen!

    Maybe its because Beyonce said that she works out in high heels? It does seem like a stupid risk to be sure and if I did it I would break an ankle or both!

    There is only 1 form of exercise that I'll sometimes do in heels - karate. Yes, karate. I've been taking/teaching karate for years. I usually go to class right from work, so I'm in my work clothes when I show up and I'm always in heels. Come to think of it, if I'm not wearing sneakers, I'm in heels. It's a thing with me.

    Anyway, my sensei asked me how often I wear heels and I told him practically every day. And he asked if I was to get attacked in a parking lot, what are the odds that I'm wearing heels? I told him pretty high, unless I'm attacked leaving the gym. So he made me learn all my kicks, stances, katas, etc. in heels. Yeah, a few ankles got twisted in the process, but now I'm more confident knowing that I can leave a bar at 3AM and still be lethal. Hell, I'd love to see what a back kick in some of my stillettos would do - talk about a puncture wound!

    That is fair. I have to elevate my heels a bit when I squat to get down to parallel (or below) because my ankles are way inflexible.

    A heel is a bit taller though...

    Elevated heels take a bit of hamstringaction out of the movement and shift focus to quads. For olympic lifter it is normal to have a two cm heel under their shoe.

    Yeah that is true. I can't get much below 45 degrees with my feet on the floor with my knees in line with my toes, after that my knees have to move way out in front of my feet.

    I don't always do it, but I enjoy squatting with my heels elevated a bit. However, wearing high heels is just ridiculous. I think it's pretty obvious this is just a picture for the fellas.

    Sometimes I'll slip on some heels before lunges to make it more challenging. Other than that, I stick to platforms.

    That is a good idea! I usually show up to kendo class wearing my work clothes and everyone laughs at me when i leave with my kekogi and hakama on with my high heels...it is like a samurai with pumps! I am the same as you, if i am not in my gym clothes with sneakers on, i am wearing heels. Probably not great for my feet or my back but i have been doing it forever and i think it has actually helped my balance. I used to walk all over the place when i lived in Canada in heels (boots with heels) in the middle of winder with god knows how many feet of snow on the ground.

    I have thought about my heels as a weapon before though. Hasn't anyone seen the movie single white female? That chick does some crazy stuff with her metal pump heel so i am sure a kick to the abdomen with a stiletto would act like a knife of sorts

    When it comes to weightlifting though, i like my vibrams or barefoot. Squatting in anything but a flat shoe for me makes me fall forward a bit too much so i always make sure my feet are planted solidly on the ground.

    But, I get the impression that she isn't lifting in heels because she's a stickler for mechanics.

    Well it makes perfect sense to me, ok you know I'd make a crack about lifting in heels but I just imagined trying to shop for a pair of size 13 heels...obviously the picture is just for show, the idea of a pair of trainers with lifted heels makes sense, but true heels...that's just asinine. And don't get me wrong, I'm all for a shapely backside but that picture is definitely not one of her better ones.

    I can't imagine lifting in heels. If I'm lifting, I make sure to wear indoor football shoes since they're flatter - even regular running shoes have too much elevation.

    Interesting note about doing karate in heels - that makes a lot of sense for self-defense; you'd want to learn those techniques in the clothes you usually wear to be most effective, I'd think.

    Just my two sense. I realized last week while out dancing with my girlfriends, that every time I got "low" in my high heels, I felt a crazy burn in my booty. Professional dancers are always in heels & I think they have some of the nicest butts around- granted they aren't lifting weights and... I would never lift in heels but try squatting & holding it the next time you have a pair on and feel how it targets your behind aggressively & differently.
