    Before Final Exam - Better to stay up all studying or get 8 hours sleep?

    I heard getting a solid 8 hours helps, but would it be better to stay up a while studying the material and try making due with 5-6 hours instead?

    As someone who's pulled all nighters, I would say efficiency goes down the drain for me, however I do manage to get some learning done.

    eh idk its tough.

    I did an all nighter on monday night cuz I had 3 exams tuesday. I'd say it was worth it because I did well on the exams. I definitely noticed that I wasn't learning/retaining info once I started getting really tired in the morning.

    I think the best for me is getting like 4-5 hrs of sleep and waking up in the morning to review.

    I also think that if I wouldn't have pulled an all nighter I wouldn't have done as well as I did on the exams though lol

    depends on how much time you have put into studying before, if you got a lot more you don't know then study. If you paid alot of attention in class etc then sleep. I always studied but got 4-5 hours sleep (its really risky though).

    study until your fatigue prevents you from really retaining anything. usually i'll study until i hit the wall where you read an entire page, and have no idea what you just read. sleep for 3-4 and then get back after it.

    Yep. I'm an advocate of the study til you can't and then sleep for 3 or 4 and wake up early and study more. Don't pull an all nighter.

    agreed. if you dont know/never looked at the material, then it doesnt matter if you've rested or not. a big thing i always live by is to not stress, just sit down and do it. also, just hang out for the 30-45 minutes leading up to an exam if its something major. just hang out and clear your head.

    If you are clueless a good night sleep won't help you



    If you are in between those two it is kind of a tossup, I sleep like **** before an early exam anyway so generally opt to just stay up.

    5-6 hours is pretty much a full night sleep bro... 'stay up & study' implies all nighter or at least less than 3 hours. Unless you're taking your exam at night, 5-6 hours wont hold you back at all.

    All nighters are better imo. I stayed up late writing papers and studying for exams no problem.

    The only thing is after a few all nighters your body and mind are seriously ****ed up. It takes me a few days to get back on schedule it feels bad man.

    I say sleep. I don't even suggest studying right before a test - the couple little factoids you MAY pick up are negated by mentally fatiguing yourself and stressing out right before a test - which you quickly lose out on as you start making mistakes. Particularly true with math and subjects based in math. With something like philosophy it might work because you're just regurgitating (you won't remember any of it later obviously, big loss).
