Protein powder w/ water tastes gross!!!

    Hello everyone!

This is my 1st post and I need some advice....

My trainer wants me to cut out my fat free milk that I mix with protein powder, but I tried it with just water this morning, and it was soooo awful! I couldn't even finish it.

So, are there any other ways to mix it into a drink mix so that it is bearable?
I saw online that Optimum 100% Whey Protein has been ranked #1 in the store, and that it is offered in flavors like apple pie and chocolate milk, but if I buy it and mix with water, will it taste like advertised?

My protein is off brand 100% whey protein that I bought from WalMart.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Just neck it as fast as you can if you dont like the taste. haha
Maybe you could get unflavoured whey and mix it with water and blend with frozen berries.

Sorry im not much help, ive gotten used to the awkward chocolate taste with water with my shakes. But its still nasty.

I used to buy that powder from Walmart as well. Walmart whey protein is nasty to drink, but you can put it in protein pancakes, muffins, milk, etc. I'm not sure which flavor you got, but the chocolate is the worst Body Fortress flavor in my opinion. Try buying a different brand. I switched brands b/c I couldn't stand the Walmart kind anymore. Good luck!

Why does your trainer want you to eliminate it? Are you dieting to compete, or doing something that requires an equally restrictive diet? If not, I'd just tell your trainer that you're not going to do that. If he's worried about the calories, I'm sure there are others you can cut to compensate for it. IMHO making something taste gross is a good way to make you dread it and then stop eating it. Not a good idea when you need that nutrition.

The taste will eventually grow on you and become more tolerable. I didn’t really like protein mixed with water at first. I use tap water at room temperature that’s not very cold. I thought it helped the taste somehow. You might also try buying a more premium brand of protein. There are a lot of different proteins types and flavors to find.

Agreed...even cutting some of the milk and mixing it thicker so you can drink it would be a way to cut the cals a little.

There ARE protein powders that taste good in water. Beverly's chocolate UMP or Muscle provider are great. I like Champion Nutrition and Jarrow's chocolate if it's chilled. Have had good luck with several flavors of isopure. Sometimes the trick is in not using as much water as the directions ask for (3-4 oz is plenty). All you can do is experiment until you find something you like.

I am wanting to compete in figure bodybuilding this coming summer.
At this time we are tweaking my meal plan and supplements. I've lost 25 pounds now and kept it off, so I'm ready to try and get on stage as a new goal.

(Personnally I am excited and extremely nervous at the same time - to be like all of those women online and on stage is such a dream that I'm afraid I'll never look like that.)

Sounds like you have a bad tasting protein powder. I've had some that are awful, and some that are quite good.

Optimum has some good proteins, and I suggest you take a look at my full review:

Optimum Nutrition proteins taste good in water, the flavors I've tried anyway (Double Rich Chocolate, Banana Cream, and Chocolate Mint). My favorite flavor to mix with water is Arctic Lemonade flavored powder by Xtreme Formulations. That stuff is seriously delicious, especially when made with just 4 or 5 ounces of water. I bought a tub a few weeks ago and I'm hooked.
On a mini-cut, then onto maintenance mode for the summer.

Great! I'll try the variety pack and see which one tastes best to me... and avoid the ones you mentioned tasted bad. There is so much info. to take in on here.
One article mentioned 5 basic supplements to have to begin bodybuilding:

    1) protein powder
    2) daily multivitamin
    3) omega 3
    4) BCAA

My favorite has been ON strawberry with a teaspoon of fruit punch gatorade mix in water. Diff taste but its really good. And the teaspoon of gatorade equates to like 25 calories.

I always drink a protein shake with water at the gym and it sucks. I'd say just chug it as fast as you can until you can buy some more. Blending it with a couple ice cubes if your at home does the trick for me.

I will never drink a protein shake with water ever. I been competing for over 10 yrs and there is no reason a person needs to cut out dairy...but I'm not your trainer.

    Good luck.

I found a protein shake that tastes pretty good with water, if you have a Nutrishop in your area check out the Pro5 powder. I went in and they let me try three flavors orange, strawberry and chocolate all tasted great, I took home the chocolate.
If this were easy, everyone would walk around ripped.

What about using plain almond milk? It has alot fewer calories and has the consistancy of milk so it makes the shakes taste alot more familiar/pleasant. I cant really tell a difference between the two- but I've been off milk for quite awhile in favor of the almond....

    Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze

My trainer wants me to cut out my fat free milk that I mix with protein powder, but I tried it with just water this morning, and it was soooo awful! I couldn't even finish it.

So, are there any other ways to mix it into a drink mix so that it is bearable?
I saw online that Optimum 100% Whey Protein has been ranked #1 in the store, and that it is offered in flavors like apple pie and chocolate milk, but if I buy it and mix with water, will it taste like advertised?

My protein is off brand 100% whey protein that I bought from WalMart.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Well, there is *sometimes* a reason- not sure if it is the case with the OP or not, but... It could possibly be a personal thing. Some people in general dont tolerate dairy well. In general there is no reason, but within specific individuals there may be... For me, certain dairy products leave me bloated and wreak havoc on my skin- but I'm sensitive to it- it's not something that would bother everyone, of course.

    This.

I recently found almond milk and I <3 it!! I have issues with lactose and this stuff is great. Tastes pretty close to real milk and it makes my cookies n' cream protein shakes yummy!

I'm not sure if he would let you have fat free cottage cheese, but if you can, try this..

    1/2 c f.f. cottage cheese
    about 1/4 - 1/2 c water
    splash of vanilla
    splash of splenda
whatever fruit you can or want (I usually use berries)
and protein powder to make up your protein requirements (I use vanilla - but I guess any flavor that would taste good with fruit will do).

Blend it up - yummy! the cc makes it thick like a smoothie.

I agree, I don't think there is anything wrong with drinking milk. I have at least one glass a day (usually mixed with XF Ultra Peptide 2.0) because it's the greatest tasting stuff ever. Sometimes I'll drink another glass at some point in the day and I'll consume plenty of other dairy as well. But I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't like whey mixed with milk. I don't know why, but I'll just mix it with water and eat a bowl of cereal with milk for a PWO snack. Nothing wrong with milk though.

I've never had a protein powder that I would say tasted good. They are all pretty darn nasty IMO. SOme are better than others. I just basically suck it up and chug it down and get it over with.

    Good luck

OP's post states that her trainer advised her to cut it out. I use soy milk or skim milk. Sometimes I do V8 light with like Vanilla whey or something. But mostly mix in berries, fruit, spinach, pumpkin. Lots of yummy options.

I mix my protein powder with boiling hot water.

It makes a noticeable difference, it's not nearly as bad as plain water. I think it gets rid of that weird flavor/smell. It doesn't taste great but it's definitely palatable. I think heat makes a tremendous difference in taste.

If a person is lactose intolerant then yes. But in this case that has nothing to do with it. The OP has been drinking milk all along, but her trainer has cut it out because she's contest prep. I see it happen all the time and there's no reason for it. It's just one of those trainers (and there's a million of them out there) that jump on the "dairy is bad for you during contest prep bandwagon, blah, blah, blah"...and it's total bs.

The two protein powders I used to love but I can't eat anymore because they make me bloat big time(lactose intolerant) are BSN Lean Dessert, any flavor is really yummy and Ultramet and Ultramet Light by Champion Nutrition. Both mix well and taste good with water. They also work great in pancake form too Maybe your trainer might be ok with Unsweetened Almond milk. They have chocolate and vanilla flavored. Both are really good and its only 40cal. for 8oz. of it and the carbs are very minimal....like 2 or 3 grams I believe.

To advertize my owne thread http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...hp?t=121013031 a guy here gave me an excellent article about types of whey which also explains which wheys don't contain lactose, check it out!

    To the OP:
In my country, there's a saying that says "kol'ko novca, tol'ko muzike" (yes I do realize it sounds Goaul'd or at least Jaffa ), and it means "for so much money, so much music". If you are going to buy the cheap stuff out there, you have to count on bad taste and lesser results, as well. I'd suggest buying a brand name protein which is more expensive, but also more effective... if your goal is to compete and you made such good progress (kuddos, btw!) a few extra bucks shouldn't be a problem!
