ok, can someone tell me why it is that older women have developed upper glutes or fat on top but their butt on the bottom flattens out?
i've noticed this on so many women and of course, never want that to happen to me. what's the deal here? is it because of menopause and hormones causing a redistribution of fat? is it because most of the movements they make keep the upper part of the butt developed? i'm at a loss. do any of you know what i mean and perhaps have the reason why?
i was going to search for pictures but thought better of it...

First of all, LOL @ Thread title!!
And secondly, I totally know what you mean...it's sort of a pancake butt or a triangle butt...Hard work = Hard body.

I'm trying to picture what you're talking about...but I'm not sure I want to, lol. Most older women (actually most younger women too) who don't work out just have saggy flat pancake butts anyway. No curve at top or bottom. It could be genetics that determine that sort of shape you're describing, especially if you're referring to older women who do workout.

Okay, now I have a much clearer picture. It appears that the first one is like that just because she is extremely skinny (emaciated) and has no muscle mass. I'm not sure about the second one, it almost looks photoshopped because I don't think I've ever seen a body shape like that. I doubt either of those ladies lifts though and I'm sure that both could achieve nice butts if they did a lot of work.

As we women age fat does redistribute due to hormal changes, but as long as you stay active and lift even when your 60+ I think you'll excape that fate lol. Pancake Butt... I just gigled out loud hehe.
If this were easy, everyone would walk around ripped.

Did you call an old lady's butt?
A few things are at work here, loss of muscle mass, increase in body fat, and gravity. All can be rectified with our lifestyle here.
As for fat redistribution at/around menopause, all that means is the ability to retain more fat in the mid-section than before. Regardless of where you gained fat in your youth (upper or lower). If you already gain more in the middle than the hips and thighs, it'll get worse. If you usually get heavier in the hips and thighs, you'll now gain better in the middle. You still gain fat everywhere and problem areas are all over the place. That second lady probably gained weight in that pattern her whole life. I've seen women with some pretty different fat distributions.
Don't fear, it doesn't have to be that way. My butt is looking pretty darn good

I now regret viewing those photos - I think I'm going to make my way to the eye candy thread to get them out of my head
Great thread by the way!

Phew! this is good news. yeah, my title is bad. i should have worded that differently :-(
actually, the reason i posted is cause a woman in my gym who is totally skinny and not old imo maybe 45-50, has this butt. just got me thinking cause i'd definitely say she was in shape but i guess she's not doing anything for her posterior cause it's got that upside down triangle thing going.
couldn't figure out if i was looking into my future considering her thin build.
anyway, i'm just glad i know what to do to stave off the increase in body fat, decrease in muscle and gravity...

I want to die laughing and screaming!
I think I know what you mean, but I always referred to it as the 'square' butt. Maybe it's also because some women get more waistline girth (losing some of that s-curve), causing the whole area to look a bit squarish in the back?“Any idiot can face a crisis, it is this day-to-day living that wears you out.” Anton Chekhov

LOL, this thread is just too much! No one is doomed to have a square butt, even if you're blessed with the worst genetics ever. Every butt can be improved :P.

Im only thinking its because of the depleition of muscle mass over time that has created the odd shape?

Sadly, my butt used to look like that. Not quite as bad as that but I had a pancake ass! It was like a barn door--flat and wide and not very attractive. I think the reason behind (haha behind) it was the fact that I was overweight, never worked out and lacked muscle mass. That is how you obtain a flapjack ass.
Just think if you sit and sit on it all day its gonna eventually take on that flat, wide shape!
I <3 this thread.

This is hilarious!! I'm tempted to do two things:
1-save one of the pix to my bf's background just to scare him!!
2-save both as motivation to never stop lifting!!wabi sabi...the art of finding beauty in the imperfections of life.

This thread is great.
Alot of older, heavier ladies seem to have these butts, like someone else has said it looks like an upside down triangle kinda.
I pray that I never have one...

Was working my way out of that one, after five kids. I did look pretty good 5 years ago, but got sick and have had a couple more surgeries (Jan and Apr 2009)that sat me on my rear. But I know the formula. Lunges, Lunges, More lunges. Squats. Etc Antyhing to move that glute muscle. won't forget cardio. Most important.

Sorry, that did not come out right getting late here and have 5 kids to put to sleep.
Weight training is the most important hand in hand with nutrition. Then some cardio. IF you can do the cardio. I am afraid I may have another surgery as I am having problems with shin splints-similar to my husband. So weight lifting is number one for me. I eat healthy anyway.

Old lady here who remedied "old lady butt" with consistent squats.
Gravity takes it's toll indeed-but I'm happy with the results of my program. This ole bootie of mine is looking pretty good and filling out the jeans quite nicely these days.
I call squats my "poor man's butt lift."
BTW-title cracked me up, and the pics almost made me lose my lunch. You can throw in the towel, or you can use it to wipe the sweat off your brow.
