Clicking is generally fine without any pain.

If you are still concerned, make an appointment with your doctor and talk with him/her

Chondromalacia patellae is basically wearing down/grinding of the articular surface of the patella/femur causing pain.

This can likely be resolved with some physical therapy.

They are sending me for some
x rays and they said it could be because of my quad muscle not strong enough yet going to see if I need to get another surgery

I'm surprised your physio didn't have you strengthening your quad, if at least, using isometric exercises. Very weird.

Try to strengthen your quads as much as possible if they're weak/unstable WITHOUT painful exercises. Experiment a bit to find which ones will help. Quad sets, maybe some wall sits, etc.

Let us know once you get X-rays and/or whatever else.

Personally I wouldn't go with leg extensions, leg curls is the better way to go!! Try some stabilization excersises that require a lot of balance! One leg squats or squats on a balance board etc. Do them with the best form possible, 15-20 reps.

After ACL surgeries it is very important to train the quads and stabilize the knee area, I do that with all my patients in rehab!

If you'd like to get further advice, let me know!

    Have a nice day!

I had my ACL and MCL repaired same age as you, its about 8yrs later now and I still get some clicking from time to time. As long as your doctor finds no other issues your best solution is to build as much muscle on your quadricep as possible to help support the strain on your knee.

I suggest you wear a patella support strap around the front part of your knee to help keep your knee in tract. Also invest in a good joint support supplement and plan on using it the rest of your life.

Just avoid exercises that further inflame or aggravate your knee and tailor make your workout program around that.

Okay, coming back to this thread...

First off, I suggest reading this... not sure why I didn't recommend reading it last time.
    http://www.eatmoveimprove.com/2009/1...-dysfunctions/

For chondromalacia patellae / patellofemoral you'll want to do:

    1. Do glute activation and strengthening work
    2. Do hamstring strength work
    3. DO NOT let your knee go valgus (collapsing in) during any exercise
    4. Do soft tissue work and stretch out your quads, IT band, tensor fasciae latae.
    5. Increase ROM in calves especially if you're going valgus

Get inflammation down with fish oil, massage, and possibly ice.

    thankyou great information. repped.

started running on the tredmill it feels like if i run to slow it clicks every step but soon as i speed up it just goes away even if i do lock out, maybe i just dont feel it but thats that. starting to be able to stretch my legs out before i couldn't because of lack of ROM now its starting to get better and better. clicking still there every step PHYSIO Therapist said that there could be floating around cartilage or the doctor missed it when he went to go and clean up my knee.

running i get pain sometimes but other times i dont.. why dont i get it all the time?

Don't use the treadmill. Walk up stairs if you have to for your cardio.

Treatmill pulls the ground under you for you, so it eliminates a lot of the hamstring work. That's likely why your hamstrings are weak in the first place (besides maybe not doing correct technique on squats, deadlifts or whatever).

Differences in treadmill vs. ground study:
    http://www.sciencedirect.com/science...220a1057ea77eb

No clue why you don't get it all the time. Could be a warmup thing or something else. There's too many variables for me to say anything especially over the INternet.

worked my legs for the first time in a few weeks due to winterbreak and i can barely walk since they are so soar haha.

would you suggest biking over running??

Stairmaster, stairs, etc. are fine. So are lunges, etc.

Just make sure your knees are tracking over your toes and you're doing them with correct form.

Biking over running for now yes. Just because running is impact and you don't wanna tear up your articular cartilage when your knee isn't articulating correctly with patellofemoral.

Just make sure your knees are tracking over your toes and you're doing them with correct form.

Biking over running for now yes. Just because running is impact and you don't wanna tear up your articular cartilage when your knee isn't articulating correctly with patellofemoral.
starting to do olyptical but still my knee clicks with every revolution it goes around, gives me a good sweat. thankyou for everything man.

Clicking is OK as long as your knees are tracking right and there's no pain.

yes but there is like 5-6 clicks every time i fully extend my knee which is super annoying and it hurts my brain to think that its still not healed/ able to be pushed yet.

If you're that worried get it checked out by a doc.

Most of the time clicking is due to improper articulation of the joint usually due to msucle imbalance.

If your quad/hamstring strength ratios are off that would do it. Usually with ACL tears you see significant quad atrophy so most of the rehab work is focused on quad strengthening.

I haven't seen you personally so I don't know if its your quad or ham that needs more strength work and/or you need to be doing proper technique to get the muscles involved correctly in things like squatting.

    No, I didn't say that.

I said that IF you have an imbalance and/or improper motor patterns THEN possibly fixing the imbalance using proper technique during movement will rectify the problem.

Simple strengthening with no regards to the aspects of what is going on with the area may or may not work.

I would ask your PT to evaluate your strength and look for possible improper motor patterns within your knee lower body complex. You probably don't have enough knowledge to do it yourself.

starting to run for 15-20 minutes at 6.0 - 7.0 depending on the mood im in. clicks when i hyper extend minor pain just from the impact started doing single leg lunges into a half ball with no shoes dont know if thats gonna help but still lots of clicking when i hyper extend. squatting 155 for 10 165 for 8 175 for 6 all leg exercises getting stronger, but when doing quad extensions scared of locking out due to all the clicking while doing the exercise.

What area of the knee is the "clicking" coming from?

I'm about 8 months out from my ACL/MCL/meniscus reconstruction and I get slight clicking from time to time with no pain. Especially on extension.

i had the same issue, Clicking without pain(had half of my lateral meniscus taken out November the 20, 2009) when squatting i had this slight caching clicking as i started coming back from a deep squat. As the weight went up the clicking went away. i also started using a brace (donjoy playmaing) and it help alot with stability
