Breathing while punching and kicking in MT

So the little ishhh noise thats nade when punching and kicking i know that you're supposed to do it I'm just not exactly sure why. I always assumed it was so that you're tensing your stomach since it's open during a punch.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Helps you to remember to breathe, and I was also told it keeps your jaw aligned in case you get hit while you're throwing your punch.

    Just means they're working hard.

It can get annoying when guys scream and growl when they strike, but I've never been bothered by someone exhaling.

its not a MT thing, all combat sports use it, its just a way of exhaling since somehow strikes seem a lot easier and less taxing (maybe theyre even more powerful, it does seem like it) while exhaling, so basically any sound will do

like already mentioned, it helps by forcing you to breathe often, which allows you to have more oxygen fueling your movement. noobs have a tendency to hold their breath and go for huge punches which will leave you exahusted with your hands down by your waist after a few minutes.

i learned this in kickboxing but now use it in all aspects of training. when i shoot for a takedown or throw i usually exhale. it saves energy when you need it the most (transitioning quickly after the takedown/throw).

These and it also braces your core and posterior chain when you land the strike. You can absorb the feedback from the strike you deliver better (like breathing out when you land from a throw) vs holding your breath, allowing for a harder strike. Very similar to a kiai done by Karatekas and TKD folks. Just be careful doing this too much, especially when you are doing prolonged striking drills for cardio (like ground and pound drilling or sustained chain punching or any drills where the focus is not on the technique of striking), where you should just breath normally. Imagine being in mount and hissing with each strike, but not doing enough damage. If you get reversed you might not have enough stamina left to defend (breathing normally here would allow you to maintain your cardio in case the worst happens).

You don't want to be tense. It's to make sure you're breathing and also to ensure that when you get caught, you're not holding your breath as that's very bad.

Ever get hit in the body while you're holding your breath? Sucks, right?

    That's why.
"The sun is always gonna rise, and always gonna set and I'll just keep on punching because everyday is gonna bring something different and I just want to be ready for it."
    - Jens Pulver

If you refer to a fighter who you've never met in real life as "my boy" as though their performance somehow reflects well on you for simply being a fan, you're a lame ass.
