Dave Tate on gaining size
Dunno if repost... I read this on another forum so I thought I would copy and paste it here for you guys. I think this will give the "hardgainers" I better idea of wtf is up.
In Recent Tnation interview Dave talks about gaining size....interesting:
Here's a quick story.
There was a time at the Old Westside gym where I couldn't gain weight to save my ****ing life.
There was this dude who trained there who could just put on weight like ****ing magic. He'd go from 198 to 308 and then to 275 and back down to 198. And he was never fat. It was amazing.
I finally asked him one day how he did it.
"You mean I never told you the secret to gaining weight? Come outside and I'll fill you in."
Now remember, we're at Westside Barbell. And this guy wants to go outside to talk so no one else can hear. Think about that for a minute. What the hell is he going to tell me? This must be some serious **** if we have to go outside, I thought.
So we get outside and he starts talking.
"For breakfast you need to eat four of those breakfast sandwiches from McDonalds. I don't care which ones you get, but make sure to get four. Order four hash browns, too. Now grab two packs of mayonnaise and put them on the hash browns and then slip them into the sandwiches. Squish that **** down and eat. That's your breakfast."
At this point I'm thinking this guy is nuts. But he's completely serious.
"For lunch you're gonna eat Chinese food. Now I don't want you eating that crappy stuff. You wanna get the stuff with MSG. None of that non-MSG bull****. I don't care what you eat but you have to sit down and eat for at least 45 minutes straight. You can't let go of the fork. Eat until your eyes swell up and become slits and you start to look like the woman behind the counter."
"For dinner you're gonna order an extra-large pizza with everything on it. Literally everything. If you don't like sardines, don't put 'em on, but anything else that you like you have to load it on there. After you pay the delivery guy, I want you to take the pie to your coffee table, open that ****er up, and grab a bottle of oil. It can be olive oil, canola oil, whatever. Anything but motor oil. And I want you to pour that **** over the pie until half of the bottle is gone. Just soak the **** out of it."
"Now before you lay into it, I want you to sit on your couch and just stare at that ****er. I want you to understand that that pizza right there is keeping you from your goals."
This guy is in a zen-like state when he's talking about this.
"Now you're on the clock," he continues. "After 20 minutes your brain is going to tell you you're full. Don't listen to that ****. You have to try and eat as much of the pizza as you can before that 20-minute mark. Double up pieces if you have to. I'm telling you now, you're going to get three or four pieces in and you're gonna want to quit. You ****ing can't quit. You have to sit on that couch until every piece is done.
And if you can't finish it, don't you ever come back to me and tell me you can't gain weight. 'Cause I'm gonna tell you that you don't give a **** about getting bigger and you don't care how much you lift!"
Did I do it? Hell yeah. Started the next day and did it for two months. Went from 260 pounds to 297 pounds. And I didn't get much fatter. One of the hardest things I've ever done

"Didn't get much fatter"? How can you tell with a powerlifter?
Seriously, he is claiming he put on the best part of 40lbs in two month and it wasn't 90% fat?
I can see the lesson in here for hardgainers - yes you can eat more. But this is taking it to extremes.

You're wrong and I won't bother to explain why.

The sheer volume of work those guys put in and the large doses of steroids they're on make this information misguiding and unneccessary for average lifters.

Tate is pretty funny but I think the moral of the story is quit thinking you can't gain weight, quit thinking you're a "hardgainer" and just f***ing eat more.

yup
To guys starting out - please understand: when you can deadlift 450lb for 10 reps your back, hamstrings & traps will reflect THAT not which program you used to get there. When you can curl 150 for 10, your biceps will reflect THAT, not which program, rep range or method you used to get there. There is no voodoo independent of poundage progression, just faster and slower ways of getting to your next pit stop.

That is kinda overkill, unless ur a 300 pound man, like dave, with a really high metabolism i guess. Guy eats like 10k cal a day.

i dont see what the issue is - you dont copy the workouts of the pros/elite lifters, you do the ones best for you. i dont see how diet is any different
i dont compete against you. i compete against myself yesterday, last week, last year

Dave Tate hasn't really been fat in any picture I've seen him in. Not bodybuilder lean, but always a jacked dude.
Powerlifters aren't all fat, and many of them know that high calorie diets are key to gaining strength. You know better than that.

I agree with the poster that the story itself is probably comedy, but the main purpose is valid. If you can't grow, then find more ways to get more calories. Obviously at 334# I am cutting right now, but it is amazing to me how many threads in the Losing Fat section are along the lines of "my program says to eat 2200 calories, but I can't eat that much." Meanwhile, I'm eating 2700 calories, and I can bump it up to about 4000 with ease just by adding one more chicken breast and doubling my oatmeal/rice.

Bottom line is that his goals were powerlifting related. Getting enough calories is a major concern for strength and performance athletes alike. Bodybuilders are worried about different things.
If you are a high school football player, Tate's advice is great. If you are a bodybuilder, not so much.

You also nailed it. This is strength training advice for strength trainers. Dave and company don't give two sh!ts about bodybuilding as a whole... maybe that isn't fair to say, lets just say they don't have any interest in it So, for a guy looking to total 2000lbs, eating an oil soaked pizza is kinda par for the course. For a guy looking to be "Brad Pitt in fight club" this advice sucks nuts.
Frankly, I think you haven't lived until you have had a pizza with garlic butter, but then again I'm a damn sexy mix of powerlifter and Brad Pitt, so I can get away with it

This story/article is powerlifting related, fat is not as suspect.

Dave Tate is 290 pounds with abs. I'd say he might know a bit more than you about gaining mass.

But don't forget he wasn't born 290... he had to eat and lift his way up to that.

haha, didn't know this would bring up such an argument. I guess I'll add everyone has a different metabolism so for some this may get you very fat and others like myself not so much. I litteraly can eat like this for a month strait and would not put on much fat. I find the more I eat the faster strength and muscle gains I get. Another peace of advice I have is find a routine that gives you the best strength and size gains first, and then start a high calarie diet like this.
