OP absolutely HAD to go and see for himself. He can't just take his girls friends word for it, he had no other way of knowing for certain whether the friend was somehow stirring up trouble or working an agenda of her own.

The ex-gf was absolutely capable of lying right to his face so without catching her red handed she would have tried to lie her way out of it and he would always have had that lingering doubt of only being 90% sure and relying on outside sources.

It is actually very hard at times to stand your ground in such cases where there are deep emotions involved and the other party swears blind they are innocent in spite of all the evidence. Unless you know for sure yourself there is a tendency to doubt your instincts.
