For girls who are trying to lose weight via the P90X program, but also toning up, would you suggest taking protein shakes after doing the workout?
I dont think she'll be into choking down thick shakes like most guys, but I know Nectar is a really good tasting protein that is easy to drink fast, is refreshing & loaded with good stuff. (I know Nectar isnt really liked here, but I think its a great product & really the only thing like it on the market that offers so much)
I would assume yes since she will need help to repair & recovery, but how does she just work on getting tone muscle while taking protein shakes for repair & not get the bulk body builder muscle?
Anything else other than a good multi vitamin for her to take?
She is also trying to go mostly vegan with her diet, so she wont be getting normal protein through red meat, chicken, eggs or cheese.

protein shakes? no
4:1 carb to protein drink yes
i'm also on p90x and i have a glass of chocolate soymilk after my strengh training days. just make sure its 4:1 carbs to protein
its usually a little low on carbs so i add a spoonful or so of hersheys. make sure you measure everything
p90 sells a 4:1 recovery drink but its expensive as ****.Vegan

Recovering from a workout, and getting big and bulky, and losing weight are 3 different things.
1. Yes, protein post workout is good, and you can add more milk to make it thinner. There is nothing to choke down, dont know what you have been using.
2. Getting big and bulky means more calories.
3. Losing weight means less calories.
If she is trying to lose weight, she just needs to have her reduced daily calories, and include the shake in her overall daily calories.

What drinks out there are a 4:1 carb protein mix?
I'm not interested the expensive P90 drinks.
Well since she is a vegan, she already gets a lot of carbs in her diet via breads & grains.
So if she has the carbs covered, should she still take a 4:1 protein shake? Or just a protein drink like Nectar?
She does drink soy milk regularly also.Last edited by johnnyscience; 11-10-2009 at 10:57 PM.

If its made in a lab I think it should be ok for vegans since no animals were harmed from it?
I'm just wondering if it will spike her system some how & get her sick since she wont be used to having a lot of protein in her system.
But would taking a straight protein juice like Nectar have the same effect on her body that a piece of red meat will to make her sick?

Hmm. For some reason I thought powders like Nectar were made in the lab & were all synthetic?
She does not drink milk but does drink that Silk soy milk. But that doesnt give her the huge slam of protein she is gonna need after the work out. A glass of that soy only has 7g of protein & 200 calories (which we are also trying to watch since it will be a weight loss program) wont have nearly the 50g of protein that we could make from powder.Last edited by johnnyscience; 11-13-2009 at 12:39 AM.

Whey is derived from dairy. Period. No matter what brand, lol.
If she wants to supplement her protein intake with soy protein (in addition to soy milk), she can do so. Here's a soy protein product that you may be interested in:
