How much money does a waiter make? Whats the work like?(Reps 2.5k)
At a restaurant like Chili's, that's always busy.
How much is the pay, how much can you expect to make in tips?
What are the typical hours/schedule?
Do you get to keep ALL the tips you earn? (or do you have to split it among all the waiters)
Do you take home tips nightly? Or get paid bi/weekly?
Is it easy? (what are the typical duties besides taking orders)

the pay in texas is $2.13/hr (or was before they just raised minimum wage... ill assume its the same) (srs)
also the tips depend completely on the restaurant/area/night/services you give (no homo)... i know some people that get about $40/shift and some that make $200/night.
it all depends brah

id imagine you would walk away with 80-100 bucks a night after tipping everyone out. Where i work our nights are kinda hit and miss, but when its busy I walk away with about 100. The kicker is the taxes taking out on your pay check. But overall the work is not hard once you get a little experience. Its a great job for students who need to work around a school schedule.
edit- also depends on what state you work. California the pay is still 8 and hour for a server. But you do declare tips for taxes. So it might even out at other states with low wages.

If I get a waiter I secretly think
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU - I wanted that hot blonde waitress or even the butterface brunette over there in the corner.
Tip for waiter is probably much lower, even if I am being nice. Something about a hot young girl leaning over with her ample breasts barely contained by the ill-fitting restaurant uniform makes me feel generous.

The pay is going to depend on your state. In new york a tipped employees min' wage is 4.75, however you always end up making over 10 dollars an hour even on a bad night with tips added. Typical hours are 5-6 hour days, unless your working a morning shift and a night shift. The resturant i worked at, all the waiters kept their tips, however a percentage of the tips went to the busboys and bartender. The tips you take home nightly, that's probably the worse part about the job, since you will almost always end up spending that money that very same night.

1. Depends on your locale and how customers tip. My friend makes 60-100+ given night.
2. Its up to disgression of manager. You can request and have a stable set of shifts but you may be called in too for more depending on level of staff at your current spot.
3. Yes but of course legally obligated to report it to tax
4.Usually cash tips obviously can be taken on spot. Some managers will do the weekly bi weekly format and lump it with CC payments.
It is easy in the sense that you dont' need a lot of knowledge but it isn't easy in that it gets tedious and tiresome. You will also run into dickheads and you may find yourself irritated by shifts end. As even on your worst days you have to smile and pretend you are in love with life. Chili's only discounts half price on food. Which is decent but its Chili's food......

The pay kinda sucks. If you're in a restaurant, expect to make minimum wage that the state allows. In my state, it's $4.50 plus gratuities. If you're a cater-waiter, you can probably get $8 an hour.
The work is hard. You're on your feet all the time, expected to remember where everyone is, gotta put up with dumbass bosses who are usually inexperienced but promoted to "supervisor" because they were there three years and kissed ass with the previous supervisor, the patrons are not always nice (see the current topic "is it wrong to not say please and thank you to a waiter"), and the work is terribly unrewarding.
Yes, it's a job and it pays some bills but not a lot. It's enough to keep you busy when you're not at your other job.

I waited tables for a while. I would rather stand in a food bank than do it again. You really dont make decent money.

every place is different. i know a girl who works at a chain restaurant. she only works the night shift on the weekend when permitted, as they rotate the employees (nightshift on weekends=$$). she will walk out with 200+ plus in her pocket on a typical saturday night. she says some regulars never tip and she says some do but a majority do leave something. its a good part time job for a student or as a second income but definatley not your ideal job long term.

My old place of business was only worried about me claiming enough so that I make minimum wage. So if your getting $2.38 an hour or whatever from the restaurant, claim enough so that you go over minimum age. Otherwise IRS will talk to the business.
Its easy but its hard work to be good.

in b4 IRS
You would have to be stupid to report your tips in full, if you make 40 dollars in tips, report 15. i know dudes would go as low as to report 5 dollars.
