If you don't feel comfortable going to a gym, get some dumbbells and start working out out at home. You can start out walking for cardio, building up to a jog or even a run. If you have a bike use it. It's not as bad as you might think, just give it a go and forget about other people.

well when i first started out (i was pretty chubby) before i knew ANYTHING about training and clean eating i went to a nutritionist and he put on a diet and workout, just on the treadmill tho. anyways when i first started out i did it on my treadmill at home. now i go to the gym tho and i still feel like people are watching me bc i dnt hav that good confidence even tho i look not to shabby with clothes on, so you just gota go. just come in with ur ipod earbuds in and leave with them in. concentrate on u and only u, and then when you loose a good amount of weight people will start commenting and itll make you feel good and then when u get close to ur goal theyll be stairing for the right reasons ; )

First thing. GET YOUR DIET IN CHECK! This site is an excellent resource to help you do so, read the stickies, check out the nutrition subforum as well. Now that said;
You can walk for 30 minutes. If not you can crawl for 30 minutes. You can probably lift 20 pounds. If not lift 10. If not lift 5.
Everyone starts somewhere. Back in june i was 250 lbs, and a smoker. Now i can finally jog a mile and a half without stopping and i'm working on a 5k race. I'm at 190 lbs but my body fat has dropped tremendously and i would still consider myself overweight (just not obese anymore ;p). Everyone starts somewhere man, just remember it will NEVER get easy, why?: because you will always push harder. If 2 mph is hard now in 2 months you'll be doing it at 6 mph and it will be hard. Stress is what pushes your body to adapt. Good luck on your transformation man , there are people floating around this site that have started off waaaay worse than you and are now rockin 6 pack abs, you can do it. No excuses. (diet is 80% of the battle!)

haha... I was exactly in your shoes back in December at 277 lbs... & I'm double your age...
Let the people staring at you be motivation because you will succeed. If your to scared to go to the gym or even too nervous, just by a home Olympic Weight set on Craigslist or ebay.
Workout with weights M, W, Fri
Exercise - T, Th, Sat
Stretch - Sun

You can do it...
Back in december I couldn't stand up for more than 7 minutes at a time because I work as a computer specialist and I sit all day. I was way out of shape ...

Exatly one year ago I started going to the gym, I was 230 pounds, the fatest person in the gym...huge mboobs, big ass, huge tshirts... now Im the guy that goes everyday, maybe one of the 2 or 3 guys that lift heavier in that gym, and the one that gives some advice to new people with no idea about nutrition or working out
Do it for yourself, once you are at the gym focus in your workouts, get some music, and lift the weights my friend...I know how it feels, so go and burn the fat right now....**** the ones that stares at you or not, you shouldnt give a **** about them ; )NI GALLINA NI BOSTERO, DEL ROJO HASTA LOS HUEVOS

Strongly suggest you buy a bicycle. Bikes are great for cardio that you can adjust to your fitness level. At the start, a few minutes will be hard work, but you'll be amazed how quickly you can build your fitness and burn fat. Bikes won't batter your knees, and there's nothing like zipping past some skinny guy in shiny shorts to give you a confidence boost.
Also, of course, bikes provide transport as well as exercise, so you are more likely to actually get on it and move.
In case you are wondering, a normal bike will carry you easily. Any decent hybrid/road bike will have no trouble taking your weight.65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs = keto.

Dude, don't worry about the way other people look at you, you have to start somewhere...and that's not going to change unless you put the work in and you finally like what you see back, people can read confidence like a book, that's all you need.
The way i see it, people in the gym would give you props for being in there and working, instead of if they saw you mowing down on a cheeseburger at a mc d's...Just go in there and start, thats the big thing...soon you will have an addiction for the gym once you see change...change happens in everybody that puts in the work!**CAN Army Veteran**

First off F!@K what other people think... At this point you are doing this for you and your health. The fact that you are making an effort to improve yourself should inspire others. If someone doesnt see it that way they are most likely A-holes and it what they think shouldnt matter.
Honestly I would reccomend a good look at your diet first. If you cant get on a tredmill for more than 5 mins start off by just going for a walk each day.
There are probably 100 quotes along the lines of "the first step is always the hardest" or "every great journey begins with a single step". Point being just go for it.
I myself lost around 60 pounds. I know thats not nearly as much as you may like to lose but I belive consistency is key.
Good Luck!Last edited by carlsonjp; 11-10-2009 at 08:24 AM.

I agree with those above, don't let other people staring at gym get in your head! You're there to get in shape and better your life and nobody else should judge you for wanting that. Good luck!

First and foremost, tell us about your diet. Your success or failure is ALL ABOUT THE DIET.
As for the gym.... I see very heavy people at the gym every day. Yes, I look them in the eyes....just like anyone else I see at the gym.. You know what I'm thinking?
"PLEASE GOD, LET THEM STICK WITH IT! I'D LOVE TO WATCH THEM LOSE 100 POUNDS!!!
I'd bet you money that 99.9% of the people in the gym WANT TO SEE YOU SUCCEED. We're the ones that can most appreciate what you're doing. The gym is where you will have the MOST support in your life..... if you let the people in.
Be outgoing, introduce yourself...tell them what you plan to do...listen to them!

Next step imo.
I would like to see what you eat in a normal week. Perhaps make a food journal. Dont change your habbits yet just eat what you normally would. Do a google search for one you can print of at your school or something. You know the kind that record your hunger levels and how you felt when you ate whatever it was when you ate it. Im guessing there are alot of little things you could cut out or change that would drasticaly improve your health and shead lbs in no time.

Don't worry about what other people think about you in the gym. They see you're making an effort to lose weight and get in shape if anything. I felt the same way when I was 286lbs but after a few days I was like F-it..I'm here...and I'm doing something about it.
Like others have said... get your diet in check first and with exercise you'll start to drop in no time.
Best of luck to ya!

I was 230 and dropped 30 pounds in 5months. (still cutting). the best thing to do is watch your calories, drop the fast food, and drink nothing but water. try walking for the first few months (at least 1 hour everyday).
Remember this is a not a quick fix, it is a lifestyle change so don't become discouraged if you cant loose everything in 2 weeks.sup.

the 1st time i stepped into the gym when i was 16, i was like "why the fck did you guys take me here?" @ the time, i was lean. this was before i went off the rails & started getting over-fat. i was like "you guys are NUTS. i'd rather be out playing sports @ the park w/ you guys, instead." but my friends seemed to have eating disorders. =S
it lasted about all of 2 weeks. HAH.
flash forward to may of '07 when i wanted to start attending group fitness classes, water group fitness classes, & stop using my treadmill/weights @ home (since jan of '07) & start using the gym's treadmill, bike, & weights: the 1st time i stepped through the gym's doors to go into the cardio & weights section near the pool, it was probably the most shameful, embarassing, & regretful moment of my life. it was then & there that i truly felt pissed off & frusterated about letting myself get depressed/obese. but @ the same time, it helped fuel the fire; so to speak. i was like "remember this moment & NEVER let it happen again." i'm not gunna lie, brahs, i have a lot of heart. even though i've "relapsed" a few times along the way, (due to emotional reasons...haven't in a while, though,) i always find my way, again. I WILL SUCCEED. FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION, mofos!!! /m\ i've let myself know that each.and.every.day since jan of '07; feels good, man.
but it made matters worse that there was a guy, who i hadn't seen since before i lost my mind. the look on his face will forever be burned into my brain. but, once again, as i said, it helped motivate me even more. i would also see this guy that my sister knows, & the expression on his face was even worse; pure disgust as to say "wtf is wrong w/ you?! you were so hot!" ... pple would always tell me that whilst i was depressed; made me feel even worse. =(
but i swallowed my pride & sucked it up 'cause i didn't want this to continue happening for very much longer; right?
it was also just a small rec centre near my house. but there were still pple there. =/ & in all honesty, most were in good/average shape. meh. but hmm...in retrospect, it may have been a good idea to go to a women's only place; eh? =P but this little gym was the closest & had a good variety of group fitness classes & water group fitness classes. but i was just "above & beyond" terrified...nay...petrified of running into more pple from my past. i couldn't even keep my head up to look around. i kept my head down & just focused on my own shti & got the hell out when i was done.
...flash forward a few years, & now that i look just fine, my confidence is normal. i still don't care & still just go there to do my own stuff & then get the hell out; no hanging around shooting the shti w/ pple. =P I'M TOO HARDCORE FOR THAT ISH, SONNNN. xD my trance has been & will forever be my personal trainer. w/out music, there'd be just no way. my drive/determination/etc is strong...but trance makes it even stronger. hmm... i also never hired a p/t'er, 'cause i was motivated enough to do my own research & wanted to do this shti all on my own. i'm a really independent person. =O
& now, i'm a group fitness instructor, myself, & am almost a personal trainer! =P teaching classes is kinda lame but makes me happy. & becomming a p/t'er is starting to feel like the most rewarding thing on the face of this earth. helping pple, who were once in my situation, is gunna be "above & beyond" rewarding for me. =) for fckin' REAL, guys!!!Last edited by trance__dreamer; 11-10-2009 at 09:42 AM.

Honestly - i know what you mean - but think about it for two seconds....are you doing it for them ? or yourself ? Always compete against yourself and set minor and major goals...like for instance ok this week i am going to try to eat healthy....this month my goal is to loose between 5-10pounds...in 10months i am going to loose 70pounds....is productive and motivational to set goals like that...Dont give a **** about anybody first they will look down at you and if you keep up they will ENVY you...:P

Also keep in mind that a lot of people giving advice go to the gym and in hindsight might be those people staring at you.
What I am getting at, most everyone here helps out a ton. They might be looking at you because you are new and didn't notice you before and you never know what they are thinking, unless it really shows, example would be someone scouring at you or rolling their eyes.
Try not to let it bother you, because you are there to help change your life for the better, period! Do it for yourself to get in shape and enjoy the benefits for when you feel better about yourself. Just remember to be confident in yourself and try to stay motivated! It is my Achilles heel, staying motivated as I don't have the time to workout like I would.
I only wish I could find time for a gym. I barely have time in a week to hit up my bowflex twice a week. Least you can go.
Good luck and like you said, **** them if you feel they are judging you!Current Stack

IMO, there are three types of people who stare at fat people in the gym: the Strong, the Weak, and the Stupid.
Type 1: The Strong: They want to see you succeed, they realize how hard every single step for you can be and they want to see you push yourself. They take inspiration from seeing someone push themselves and they use that to keep themselves motivated. You are helping these people out by staying and working out as hard as you can.
Type 2: The Weak: They want to see you quit, because secretly inside they want to quit and seeing you pushing yourself fills them with shame. There is no way they can get off that treadmill before the fat-guy, they tell themselves. Every minute you stay there working out, forces them to workout longer than they would have otherwise. You are helping these people out by staying and working out as hard as you can.
Type 3: The Stupid: These are the ignorant snobs. They've really never struggled with anything in their lives. They haven't done the work. They come to the gym to socialize more than to workout. They do look down on you, don't kid yourself, they do. They don't understand how you got so fat, and if they were in your shoes they would have no will-power or understanding of how to correct it. But some day, life won't be so easy for them, someday they will find themselves in a situation where they do need to work hard for something, and they will need something to inspire them. Perhaps it will be that memory of seeing you come to the gym day after day to suffer, and remembering the result you achieved that inspires them to work harder than they've ever worked before. You are helping these people out by staying and working out as hard as you can.
So soak in those stares and realize you are helping not only yourself but them as well.
Stay there and work out as hard as you can.

Bro, as an avid gym visitor, i have never really looked at anyone unless i was attracted to them (females only lol)
Nobody gives a fuk about you, minus friends and family.
Sorry to say it, but its a fact of life.
Everyone is so involved in their own shiit, that they dont really give much notice to anyone else.
Just think about it dude, do you consantly look around judging people and waiting for the first opportuninty to humiliate someone?
Neither does anyone else.
If they do, then that person doesnt deserve your attention, and dont worry, if they start some shiit, someone like myself will call them out on it.
Get your shiit done and dont worry about what other people think.Goodbye fried rice, hello fried chicken!

Real inspiring, honestly some of the lifes that have been changed on this board inspires me alot to just want to work out and be more healthy for my life, and the others around me.
I thought weightlifting adds pounds?
I am going to start a regular schedule starting next monday ONLINE for everyone to see.
This is going to be embarrassing but I guess its the first step.

Putting on muscle is harder than you think. You'll find it easier to lose fat than to gain significant amounts of muscle. You probably already have a decent base, simply because you need it to carry you around.
Muscle is what will make you look good when you take off your clothes.
Ever watch Gladiators? Most of the Glads are heavy guys, but that's not what people notice.....65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs = keto.
