It's her dream to work with animals. She has chosen a program which is a one month trip to south africa volunteering with lions . She takes a huge flight to africa gets off the plane, takes a 2 hour bus ride to the animal place then works for a month and goes to town with giudes. She will be going either alone or with my sister. they are both 22 year old white girls, is this safe or what?
and just to answer your questions now,no they are not getting paid it's volunteer work. They are the ones paying $5000 each. (not that i care about the money)
so is this safe?

Don't ever put "safe" and "africa" in one sentence

you'd have to consider whether they are staying in a compound and what sort of security they have. They could try to get those rape female condoms that rip the knob off in SA.

South Africa is a pretty hardcore place...Compton fools would easily get smoked out there, i'd personally be very careful...

Sure it has high crime rates and everything but if she's staying at a gated compound and working in a professional medium-high security then she has nothing to worry about. In fact, her biggest fear should be the lions going ape**** on her like they did with roy.

Is it safe? Well let's break this down; Young niave white women who are going into a foreign land strife with civil wars in multiple regions; wild animals that have been known to be man eaters if not just man killers; the area is ripe with disease and very poor water management with dysentary, AIDS, ebola, and various other life taking micro-organisms abound; young men who carry weapons like they're condoms in a wallet; our gov't cannot guarantee anyone's safety there and have released documents in the past stating so.
All in all they will be alright in my opinion if you pray and do not touch yourself at night Just joking but who knows what goes on over in any third world nation.

Since ive been to South Africa 3 times (Cape town, Johannesburg and Durban). I can say that you will be safe AS LONG AS you stay street smart. eg walking or driving alone at night,
Since she wont be staying in Urban Africa then i guess she will be safe.

If she is staying in the urban cities of Africa then here is some advice
Youth from the poor areas panhandle. Don't pull out your wallet. If you wish, give them food instead of money.
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN. NEVER NEVER NEVER SHOW THAT YOU HAVE MONEY IN YOUR POCKET WHEN YOU ARE IN URBAN AFRICA
Use "Mr. Delivery" rather than be out after dark getting dinner.
Do not wear jewelry or expensive watches
Ride the Baz Bus if you are staying at hostels. It will deliver you to the door.
Have a friend watch your back if you get money from the ATM machine.
if wanting to go to Johannesburg in South Africa many travelers stay in Pretoria( a close by city) rather than Johannesburg.
Remove all signs of being an foreign tourist: camera, fanny pack, baseball hat. Adapt to fashions there. Try to tone down your foreign accent.
taking an evening stroll, or walking to venues after dark can be very risky
In the animal areas of Africa the hippos and crocs are real dangers. Though pudgy, hippos are the most dangerous animal in Africa. After sunset they come out of the lagoon to forage up to 20 miles away. Hunker down inside at sunset. Don't dangle your legs over the edge of the boat and have a croc drag you under. Respect crocodile warning signs.
use mosquito repellent with DEET concentration greater than 50%;
cover your skin with long-sleeved clothing, especially around evening
using mosquito nets while sleeping.
Municipal water is mostly safe to drink throughout the country, although a strong risk of bilharzia exists for stillstanding water.Last edited by tpt; 07-30-2006 at 04:20 PM.

no worries when they shoot like this

Just make sure you are in their line of sight whereas if you are out of the way you are more likely to get shot.

she may have the time of her life, then again she may be kidnapped by guerilla fighters and held for ransom
(my sister travelled southern asia for 6 months when she was 19 and was perfectly fine)
rule #1 is don't travel areas in conflict (i dont know if SA is in conflict currently)
tell her to take care of dingos and marsupials in australia or something..Last edited by vcmethod; 07-30-2006 at 04:30 PM.

The pictures that were just posted ARE NOT in South Africa. They are in Liberia which is in conflict right now. I hate when people think all of Africa is the same.
South Africa is NOT in any war. People please. If you have not been to South Africa then please dont reply with pictures from other different countries. Actually dont reply at all.Last edited by tpt; 07-30-2006 at 04:29 PM.
