why do nutritionists think protein is almost useless? Maybe it is!!??
We all need some protein, but why do we all think we need 200-300 grams a day?? Every nutrionist i have talked to, lols at the bodybuilding theory of eating protein.

Most nutritionists are taught to spout the RDA like it is a mantra, and are therefore useless to any sort of athlete.
Except possibly as dinner, but I never met one that looked like they would be worth the effort to clean and cook.

lol honestly, I look at what the people I want to look like do or hold true to, and do my best to replicate it on my own level.
... Eat big, eat lots of protein, and you grow. If you don't think it's true and it's a third variable and something else causes the growth, ****it, maybe it does. But if ronnie coleman eats lots of protein and trains hard at his size, people should emulate that if they want to progress in a similar fashion.

It mildly perturbs me that there is such a lack of consensus in the nutrition world.
Imo, we probably don't need as much protein as we generally are led to think.

lol @ nutritionists...
I'd much rather take advice from someone who has more muscle mass than I do, versus that small frail middle-aged woman who touts herself as a nutritionist. YA DIG?

on one side you have nutritionists claiming that under normal circumstances the human body cannot synthesize more than 30g of protein per day, and that the rest is used as energy
on the other side you have professional bodybuilders claiming you need 200-300g of protein or more per day or you're losing potential muscle growth
one side is trying to sell you on the RDA values and government approved eating plans
the other side is trying to sell you on protein supplements sold by the supp companies that sponsor them
obviously neither side is 100% correct, and until there is some kind of massive long term medical research done to prove it one way or the other, the best you can do is see how your body responds to specific changes in your diet
my 2 cents

yeah but for people who are bulking the rest would just be carbs and healthy fats which would just make you fat. Also on a cut whose gonna eat that less protein, would have to make the rest of calories from fats/carbs and thats not what you want on a proper cut.

I agree with this. We don't need nearly the protein the bb community says we do. What is a better way for a protein company, advertised in all muscle mags, to get sales than to preach 1-2g protein per lb of body weight. I maybe take in 180-200g/day. And that's being generous. It's more likely along 150g. Even Nasser didn't take in nearly close to what most people in bbing thinks he should have. The average American takes in enough protein daily to fuel an Olympic athlete.

Unless you're on gear you probably don't need more than 1g per lb, probably less.

I don't worry about measuring my protein intake. I take in protein until my farts are sour and then I put in a little more just in case I lost some protein through my farts.

Not this **** again...
We burn $100 bar tabs and other useless **** every weekend. What does it matter if you take in a little extra powder. Better overkill than undercooked.

Best response so far.
Could you imagine the fallout if a couch potato comes in and they tell them to take in 200grams of protein a day. They are already overconsuming calories. Telling them to take in more protein when they have little knowledge of food is just gonna make it worse.

Aren't there nutritionists that plan diets for athletes which are undoubtedly high in protein? How can they be taught two different things?

well you gotta get the calories from somewhere. you'd have to bump up the fat and/or carbs to a crazy extent if you're only taking in a minimal amount of protein that is considered necessary for muscle growth. somehow I think if I started having 500+ carbs per day, I'd get even more bloated. if I bumped up the fat, the nutrionists would say I'm having too much saturated fat (since there is usually some saturated fat in most healthy fat foods).
