    Will cycling build leg muscle?

I was wondering if cycling 30-40 min 2-3 days a week (uphill and downhill) will build my legs any. I like to bike to the gym for a warm up.

I always see road bikers with monstrous calves.

It will probably add size as long as your caloric intake is sufficient.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

It depends on genetics, diet, and cycling style, as well as type of bike. For me it does, but I tend to use taller gears at a slower cadence than many, if not most.

Bmx will definitley add muscle size to your legs, Riding road bikes will tone them if anything. Same thing with Sprinters and Long Distance Runners, Sprinters have huge muscular legs and Marathon runners look like their all from ethiopia.

I ride a road bike, but by no means long distances. I sprint up hills in a high gear and rest down hill in order to create an anaerobic rather than aerobic exercise. This is just to the gym and back, about 15 min each way.

Probably not (it will add SOME muscle though).

Try it and log your results for 4 weeks. Report back.

It will definitely be good for warming up your legs prior to training them, But riding a bike around unless your doing extreme uphill riding won't do that much to add muscle to your legs. Like Lucifer said it will add some but don't expect to get big gains of muscle!

ive been riding my bike to the gym for like 6 monthes now and i love it. im not really looking foward to the cold weather since i will have to drive instead. it takes me about 10-15 mins each way (2.5 miles). i dont really think its done much for my legs but its definatly a good warmup and when i get to the gym i feel ready to go.

My uncle did professional road cycling for a long time and he had huge calves and his thighs were ripped but not in any means huge.

I think it will help to some degree but perhaps not the degree you were hoping for.
