After being on a whole food and no-added sugar diet for the past month, I no longer crave bad food like pizza, hamburgers, fatty dressings, soda, junk food, etc. What is the reason for this? Will this last as long as I stick to my particular diet? The only time I sorta crave a bottle of coke or sugary drinks in general is after an intense cardio workout. I've had enough will-power to just eat an apple and stick to post-workout protein shakes.

I get a sense that this thread is about to take a left turn at any moment.

yep happened to me too, but then I got a craving for crap food (choclate sweets etc) I tried suppressing this craving for a week, couldn't do it any longer. So I solved this problem by having a cheat meal where I ate those foods to the point where I did not want to eat them any more, borderline sickness, completely got rid of my craving again.

It's great that you dont have a craving for those so called bad foods and hopefully it does last but as long as you have them every once in a while and in moderation there should be no reason why you can't implement them into your diet here and there. Best of luck in continuing to eat clean!!

Once I started eating better, I have something similar. Don't get me wrong though I still eat what you called "bad" food like hamburgers, pizzas, etc. But it's only from time to time when I eat out. I used to want them everyday and would eat fast food, microwave meals, etc everyday. Now the thought of it doesn't seem as appetizing anymore.

So are you saying that following a healthy diet makes you orthorexic? You couldn't be any more wrong. Too much throwing out mental illness/eating disorder lingo on this forum. Shocks me. I'm not afraid to eat a big greasy cheeseburger or having a dozen Reese's cups. I'm following a healthy diet to lose weight. Once I reach my goal, I'll eat as much as I'd like. I was just pointing out that eating healthier makes me not crave junk food anymore. Of course if I started eating junk food again, it'd probably grow on me again.

OP,
Your preferences are changing, that's all. It's not uncommon to go through phases of certain preferences and choices.
I wouldn't call that orthorexia at all, however I think it's important for you to be able to indulge in any foods in the right portions because there are no such things as "bad" foods. You'll be on a much better path if you purposely work in foods for pleasure or little indulgences into your discretionary calorie budget because it's just more of a lifestyle approach that way.

I agree. Thanks. I mean the first two weeks of my diet, I had a cheat day once a week. I'm going to incorporate foods that I like...doesn't necessarily mean it's pizza. My "healthy" eating might be a little overdone since I'm away at college and for example I love burgers. If I were home, I would a burger once or twice a week...but at college their burgers are frozen patties that are as healthy as McDonald's. I'm looking forward to eating more indulging food when I've lost some weight. I'm 190lbs, 22, 5'9". I feel like I need to get to at least 170lbs to feel healthy again.Last edited by golfstar22; 02-19-2013 at 10:14 PM.

I understand where you're coming from. You'll feel great when you lose another 20lbs and certainly you'll want to keep that weight off. The good thing about foods like burgers or pizza is that if you eat the right amount of calories, you can include these into your day to day eating and still lose weight just as fast if you had an equal amount of calories spent on something else with a similar macronutrient composition. By starting to learn the process of calorie counting and mixing in foods you enjoy now, you'll be WAAAAY more likely to keep the weight off once you lose it because you won't feel deprived. From what you told me about your "healthy eating may be overdone" you don't want to go too far down that path. It just leads to unnecessary stress.
