No Gym membership >: Best ways to workout without one?
Hey BB fam,
I'm a fulltime grad student and need to implement a workout routine. Only thing is I don't have nor can afford a gym membership. Any ideas on what I can do for cardio or weights? Any advice would be most appreciated!

Cardio is pretty easy. Brisk walking, generally progressing into a jog (if you are not already in jogging shape).
Lifting : Push-ups (from your knees if need be), sit-ups, crunches, seated knee raises. Sounds funny, but you can do many exercises with gallon jugs of water or sand. Google these terms for more tips. Hope this helps, good luck w/ your goals.

hey
A couple months ago I was looking for answers to the same question. Although more specifically, because of my limited ability I was looking for exercises focused on body weight resistance.
There are a lot of routines available however I just read this article here:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/becker20.htm
Was a good read and maybe worth your time.

I would start out by doing like the others mentioned, simply be active (ANY form of cardio works as long as your consistant) and eat healthy and under your maintenance (if you wish to lose weight - if not just eat healthy and monitor progress). Once you become more fit, rosstraining has a book http://www.rosstraining.com/nevergymless.html that I've heard many good things about.

Do they have a weight room at your school? If so, that should be free for students.

pullups are another thing that you don't need a gym for...just find something that gives you leverage to pull yourself up...any kinda bars you know. if you arent strong enough to do pullups that's fine you can work on the negative portion of the pull (jump up to get yourself above the bar and then slowly resist on the way down). you can also do plenty of other bodyweight exercises and i would recommend building a strong core and legs through squats and good mornings.

I've never heard of a university where a student wasn't automatically a member of the gym whether you wanted to be or not. It's part of the compulsory "student activities fee" or some similar such thing.
At my university, it costs me (an employee) about $50 a month, for it's "free" (or more accurately, included in the tuition and fees) for all full time students.

Spend $20-50 on a door way pull up bar and stick to body weight resistance (pull ups, push ups). Use a chair for assistance with pull ups til you can do them on your own. A set of resistance bands are pretty good too for home use. Until you want to add mass you may just need to get a gym membership somewhere and hit the weights. Find a routine and stick to it.
