saw a couple of rugby journals in here so i thought i join the party. basically over the last year ive gone from playing in the worst league in scotland to the best league manily down to luck and the club i'm at but also because i put in alot of work in at the gym over the last year and actually did a preseason for the first time in my life.
rugby wise where i'm at is that i'm getting a few games due to the team i play for is really strugling for props and i happend to be playing for an assisoate club and i got called up for a friendly and i managed to impress enough that ive had a stint in a few legaue games.
physically the step up in speed, fitness, size is massive and i'm really strugling to cope and i'm basically just waiting for some injuryed guys to get fit and ill prob get the boot back to my club.
things i need to improve are primary my fitness and size.
current stats
bw 98.2kgs.....droped from around 103kg in july
bf% maybe 15-20 no idea
bench 100kgsx2.....was 130kgx3 but injured rotator cuff so no bench for a while
squat 215kgsx5....moving to front squats so 90kgsx8
dead 210kgx2....working on grip so strapless is 140kgsx2
mill press 100kgsx1....find this alot easier on my shoulder.
as you can see i like my excuses and stats for my ego.
ill try keep this as up2date as pos.

east2 to prem1 in a season and me trying to stay there.
people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"
if your family was captured and you were told you needed to put 100 pounds onto your max squat within two months or your family would be executed, would you squat once per week? Something tells me that you'd start squatting every day

rugby training with accies
after saturdays dreadfull performance our coaches decided to have a full on game at training as a competition for places excercise kinda thing and it was fair to say as is with most times these things are done the 2nds beat the 1st team.
played 3x20-30min thirds i think.
first third 1st team got atacking set peice
second third 2nd team got atacking.
final third mixed team full on game.
from this i learn that my rucking skills are lasy and i tend to go soft in from the side which was screamed at me lots of time by our coach and that i'm still adjusting to the different patterns of play and that i can't hit every ruck not even every 2nd ruck at this level and i need to adjust my game management untill i raise my fitness.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

technically its the level below but its not a bridgeable moveable gap if you get me and i'm strugling to keep my place in the team.
the leagues go.
international-pro
hienken cup> amlin cup- pro(europe)
magners league-pro(scottish, welsh, irish)
Prem1-semi-pro
Prem2>Prem3>Nat1>Nat2>Nat3>regional1>regional2>reg ional3-(regionals are east, west, cally)-amateur
who one that game i don't really pay attention to accies 2's as i'm technically still a trinity player, theres some really good players in the accies 2's side alot of 'regular' 1sts who have fallen out wi the coach. how come you're playing 2's
......that league structure's about right, id put prem1 in its own little bit as the gap between prem1 and prem2 is getting pretty big, i mean you have teams like currie and ayr who are pretty much pro sides(quasy or woteva that word is is the term ive seen floating around the papers at the mo) although rugby wont be the main income or job for some players.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

i was getting like that at trinity cos they are going no-where and we'll id almost peaked there bit this wee stint i'm getting in prem1 has done me the world of good and rugby actualy feels amazing again its almost as good as u18's and u16's plus i'm learning something almost every minuet am at training aswell which is great.
i know a few guys around you're age that are just going down the gym route after a few boring seasons.
wednesday 28/10/09 gym sesh
push press 40 70 70 70 70x8
chin ups 5 8 6 6 7 BW
db decline skull crushers 5 17.5 17.5 17.5 17.5x8
ez bar standing skulls 30 30 30 30x8
deadlifts 80x6 110x6 140x5 150x1 155x1 170x6 200x3 used straps for the last two
shrugs 70x30
bb curls 30 30 30x8
slighlty rushed workout but that made it kinda good and a bit more intence really happy with the deadlifts as my grip is getting better new PR on the 1rm and 140kgx5 is 3 more reps than last week. think ill keep the last two with straps and just add reps unitll i can lift 200kgs no straps.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

monday 2/11/09
very very hungover workout pretty sure ill be looking a 3day hangover 2moro...damn hallowean.
front squats 40 80 80 80 100x8-the 100kgs felt spot on
db row 20 35 35 35 35x10
hammy curls 90 110 130 150 150x10 (lbs)
lat pull down 90 150 150 150 190x8 (lbs)- form wasn't strict enough at 190
pull ups 3 @ bw
db lunge 15 15 15 15 15x10
cleans 50 60 70 80x3 100-fail 60x5 straight into 50x8
bb row 60x8
sprints 10x100m on the rowing machine 15secs rest between sprints total distance was 1200m
actually quite pleased with this workout, sorta stuck with my routine but also did a bit of what i felt like as i added in lat pull downs and a few cleans at the end and changed the order up a bit. also happy with the progress on most of my lifts things are going up nicely and i'm also pleased with the fact that my wieght stayed the same at 97.9kgs considering all the abuse and damage i did to my body at the weekend.
can't wait to get back on creatine next week and bench press when ever i can do that again although i think it might be looking like next year before i bench again.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

i wasn't back then, who where they playing do you know anyone at accies. the club i'm at have a link with them through the minis the BAT's (Broughton, Accies, Trinity) and ive just been lucky enough to get a call up to their 1st's for the last month but ive now decided to go back to trinity and i'm not sure if it was such a good idea. was a really good month 3 starts and 1 of the bench also i played in a pre-season friendly and benched for them agaisnt selkirk earlier in the season plus i was learning something everytime i was at training which was great. hopefully ill get to go back and stay with them
i need to get myslef alot fitter if i wana play properly and keep starting at that level and then maybe pack on a few extra kg's of muscle cos i don't know many 98kg props kicking around prems.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

wednesday 4/11/09
bb shoulder press 40 72.5 72.5 72.5 75x8
chin ups 8 8 8 6@BW
decline db skulls 7.5 20 20 20x8
standing bb tricept extensions bar 30 35 35 37.5x8
deadlifts 80x8 110x7 130x2 70x12(olympic bar) 140x8 160x3(thiner bar)
rowing machine fitness drill
goal- 5 sets of 4x250m 'sprints' 30 secs rest between reps and 2mins rest between sets
2nte i managed 2sets
times 1st: 3:55 2nd 7:53
pretty decent workout, didn't have straps for the deadlifts so i couldn't build up my 200kgs but again i managed more reps at 140kgs and 160kgx3 is a new max without straps. i also think all the deadlifting effected my performance on the rowing machine as my arms where destroyed and i reckon i woulda done atleast a 3rd set if i never did the deads.
also tried benching again did 50kgsx8 and it was so sore. think ill just leave bench untill next year. shoulder pressing should keep my strength levels within reason.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

apparently the team that played agaisnt trinity last week had a few hungover/drunk guys in the team. going to the gym instead of the pub was one of the reasons i started going to the gym
monday 9/11/09
db flat bench 20 30 35 35x8
bb bench 70x12
front squat 40 70 90 90 105x8 135x3
db row 20 30 40 40 40x10
hammy curl 90 110 150 150 130x10(lbs)
s/s lat pull downs 150 170 170x10(lbs)
db lunge 20 20 20 20 20x10
rower 1st set 3:48 2nd 7:50
decent enough workout happy with the front squats and the db row really worked my grip on those 3 sets of 40kg. decided to some db bench first as the gym was busy and i couldn't get in the racks then did some bb bench cos i was still waiting on the racks benching is still not 100% ill give it another go in a couple weeks. also chucked in lat pull downs as a super set on the last three sets of hammstring curls as the machine was free and it was better than resting. dissapointed with the rowing machine fitness as i ran out of time and my 2nd set was slower than friday's.
ive also notice that mondays are becoming more of a legs and upper back day when they where ment to be bench and squat day with assistance work and wednesday is/was mill press and deadlift day idea based on wendlers 5/3/1 workout out.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

it's pretty poor at the mo should get back to above average in the new year once i get my shoulder fit again rotator cuff is taking ages to recover i make it almost 2months since ive benched properly.....but even then ive never had a great bench press...more of a legs man.

had to change my rest to 1.5mins and had to do 500m for my last 2 250's in my 3rd set as i ran out of time again. need to start going to the gym earlier so i can rest a bit before fitness and get atleast the 4 set of 250's done.
but all in really happy with this workout out. new pb's on the deadlift again grip is starting to come along nicely it'll soon be time to get the straps out and aiming for a 300kg dead.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

naw we got beat i had an absolute nightmare, for sum reason i just couldn't scrumage duno what it is with me and playing tighthead it just shouldn't be so difficult. yeh heard about you're game we had paddy playing today.....he was benching tho and we had a 7 in the centre and another flanker on the wing.....i know he was a late call up but a prem2 centre when trinity are strugling for centres and backs surely you should start him.....i think that says whats going wrong with our club at the mo......i could go on and on and on.
