Why is one side of my nose always blocked?

Its particularly bad in my sleep, one side of my nose is pretty much always blocked and I can't breathe through it. What's weird is that it'll switch sides throughout the night.

Anyone know whats up with this? Should I see a doctor about it?

You may need surgery. I have the same problem... I *THINK* deviated septum is the correct term.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasal_septum_deviation

Do a little reading. It may be what's wrong with you and I believe it's correctable with surgery.

I have the same issue but it usually clears when after I wake up. My guess is you sleep on your side and all the drainage heads to the downward side. Doesn't really bother me unless both are plugged.
If you don't know what you're doing, it's best to do it quickly.

The symptoms match perfectly... I've had roughly 15 bloody noses on my left side, and maybe one on my right side, and I think I might have sleep apnea since I wake up often throughout the night and get crappy quality sleep....

The sleep issue is the main part, I guess I need to go get it checked out...

Is there a certain type of doctor I need to see? Or would it be easier to see a general physician first and get referred somewhere?

Yea same, I've not had surgery and I don't have much build up most of the year. Sometimes during allergy season it will be a little worse but I've only taken any Claritin or anything like 2-3 days this entire year.

My nose does bleed easy though so if I ever get tapped in a fight or anything it will start gushing but as far as the mucus goes if I blow my nose well in the morning I'm usually good for most of the day.

Whatever the ear/nose/throat specialists are called. You could probably talk with your general doc and get a reference.

TBH my nose doesn't randomly bleed anymore. It did a few times when I was in my teens, the last time my nose bleed was when I got tapped in the nose I want to say it was from only 1 side when it did though. I didn't get to see it at all when I got hit I didn't even really know I got hit in the nose till I felt the blood running as the guy was a stick figure.

ya... the left side of my nose bleeds incredibly easily, a simple tap while playing basketball is enough to get it gushing, but ya it hasn't happened in a while

guess I need to make an appointment...

Deviated septum is your problem. I had the same thing last year and I was miserable until I got the surgery. The surgery itself was about 30 mins long, and I was breathing normally within 2 months. However, your smell might go away for a little after the surgery because they cauterize the inside of your nose, but it comes back eventually...GL op surgery is the only way to fix it (except for having your friend smack you silly, but that could have other consequences...)

The nose bleeds don't affect everyone. If you always have 1 side blocked it's likely some deviation allowing everything to run to one side.

ya i got this surgery a few years ago. my nose used to bleed easily on one side, even it someone hits it lightly or i bumpinto somthing or i sneeze really hard.

now it doesnt bleed at all, and i was hit in the face too and it hurt but didnt bleed. the pain i felt when hit would make me bleed tons if i didnt have the surgery.

o yea didnt cost me a dime, yes canada

I'm suppose to take a week off a work, from the sounds of it, I will have to.

Everytime you move your head, there is a big chance that it will start bleeding again. I hate being layed up like this but I will have some awesome painkillers.

Well, does a deviated septum risk your life? Its something many people live with their entire life and not everyone has it as bad as you. I sleep perfectly well the entire night and don't have random bleeds(anymore) despite a minor deviation. Most **** that affects your sleep (apnea) isn't diagnosed during a physical etc.

I have it, but i can't justify getting the surgery as it doesnt impact on my life all that much. i sleep fine etc. Apparently there can be some bad side-effects from surgery as well you should read up on it

My surgeon told me that it's normal, and it's also normal for it to change sides. It's just different for each person on how much it is blocked.

I don't think it should be blocked to much during the day though.

Do a little reading. It may be what's wrong with you and I believe it's correctable with surgery.

Got my nose broken 2 times and after put it back in place I can't breath right with my right nostril. I'm waiting from a call from the hospital to do surgery. It's important that you do it
