    Deadlift - back pain

I tried deadlifting yesterday for the first time, keeping weight very low and concentrating on form.

If you'd like more in depth info please read the last few posts in my log http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...ghlight=%27ard

Now I did keep the weight low, got nowhere near failure yet this morning my back is killing right from between my shoulder blades down to the top of my ass. It's ok while relaxed but hurts if I walk or even I just tense. Also I'm not very flexible at the best of times (can just about reach half way down my shins with my legs straight on a good day) but today I can't seem to bend to reach further than my knees.

It does feel like muscular pain but I just wanted to check if this is normal? The only place I normaly ever get sore is in my legs so this is a new feeling to me. Should I keep trying to reach my toes and do other stretches throughout the day?

    Thanks for any comments.

    Thanks for any comments.
if your hamstring is not flexible then you are using your back. you need to stretch your hamstring and in mean time be careful with your range.

Thanks for that I'll take your advice.

The soreness has calmed down a bit now, I just went for a long walk which I think helped.

Not surprising. If you are referring to DOMS when you say back pain, then that is perfectly normal. Welcome to the world of Deadlifting.

    Thanks for all the help.

I wouldn't say I'm new to lifting but I'm certainly not experienced, been training for about 6 months but that was my first time deadlifting.

The only time I ever realy got DOMS was the first time I trained each muscle group, after that I've had slight aches but nothing to bad. Maybe I'm just sore now because it's the first time I've ever done a decent back workout lol.

I'll be back in the gym tomorrow for legs and shoulders hopefully so I'll see how I get on.

if i was you, i would do shoulders alone.

overhead dumbell press as heavy as you can stand for 4 sets. use your knees to get the dumbellss up .

then front and side latteral raises for 4 sets each..

then facepulls .. then go back to the overhead press with a light weight and rep out 20+ reps for a full extreme exhaustion on those delts..

do this and i promise bigger shoulders will come

wait till your back is fully heald before doing legs day if your going to be squatting
the whole world makes me lol
