I think you will definitly learn more with a Bachelor's Degree in the Exercise Science/Physiology field than a certification. Don't get me wrong, you can definitly apply your knowledge from the certification literature, but nothing beats a 4 year degree in terms of education and application to the real world.

Getting both a bachelor's degree and a certification is the best thing to do in the long run. You will be paid more and the experience will look great on your resume.

Gyms and Fitness Centers vary dramatically in terms of criteria regarding application pros and cons. In more depth, the higher quality degree and/or certification the person has, the higher chances the gym/fitness center will have of accepting you. Alot of people I work with usually have the ACSM, NASM, and ACE cert's with or without the Bachelor's Degree in the field.

On a personal note, I am doing the combination with the Bachelor's Degree and a national level certification such as the ones listed above. Best bet is to ask the gyms and fitness centers around your area and look at their recommended criteria.
