Does bodybuilding make you a better fighter?

Does bodybuilding and building up muscle mass make you a better fighter?

Most boxers usually are ripped rather than buff like a bodybuilder like Cutler or Coleman.

Does having all that extra muscle make your punches stronger?

No, bodybuilding muscles = gas quicker (usually), slower (usually), and aren't the most efficient for the strength/size ratio.

Strenth/endurance conditioning is far more important then worrying about asthetics.

In terms of self defense yeah maybe so, but when your fighting someone at an equal weight except the other guy is faster, stronger, and has greater endurance and all you have is a pretty physique you're **** out of luck.

Obviously there are some exceptions, but in general strength/endurance > a nice physique.

No training< training brah. A bodybuilder would get slaughtered by a competant fighter every time.

Not really better at boxing, because that takes experience, but it gives you a definite advantage in wrestling. And most street fights end up going to the ground at some point, so yes.

depending on what you do, if you have a wrestling background, the extra strength would help in a street fight but if your gonna brawl you have a slight advantage in the beginning untill you gas out.

it gives you a basis of strength to work with, but if you have no fighting experience or technique, a smaller person with fight training will still probably whoop you

Well of course it's gonna be a big advantage. That's why in boxing they have weight classes, you box people that are the same size as you.

base strength/explosive power is a good thing to have... but there is a big difference between muscles and strength/exposive power...

so bodybuilding is not the best way to go for fighting MMA boxing etc... a mix of powerlifting to train type 2 fibers and gain exlposive strength will help more...

and sometimes more muscle mass will hinder you bc its a big oxygen user and can help you gas out faster bc it uses so much energy and oxygen and builds up more waste products like lactic acid etc...

so more muscle mass does not mean better performance in fighting... strength and exlosive power does...

If he goes up against someone the same weight except the other guy has fight training chances are the other guy will be faster/ have longer endurance/ will possibly be stronger then the BBer after about 30 seconds.

Trust me, I have seen bodybuilders get tooled by smaller guys time and time again in training. I've seen bbers get overpowered by guys 30lbs lighter then them because they just simply gased out and got weak fast. You can't be strong if you can't breath.

No. I've seen way too many big guys get knocked out by skinny twigs. The power of your punch comes mainly from technique and speed. Strength is a good thing to have, but pointless if you don't know what to do with it.

Being stronger definitely helps you hit harder, but its not gonna help your technique if you dont train to fight.

Muscle= weight advantage and strength advantage.

Of course it will help, the people that say it dosnt help are probably skinny and delusional.

the reason why professional fighters dont gain much muscle (unless they are in heavy weight etc) is they usually want to stay in a their weight group. Gaining muscle isnt needed.

In a street fight being jacked will be a great advantage.

Well, for one thing, boxing isn't just above the power of your punch. It is about avoid punches, setting them up, accuracy, etc. If you build up your strength or size, and somebody punches you in the face with a hard blow and you get knocked out--well, you can obviously see how boxing skills would have benefited you more than bodybuilding. Bodybuilding does not do much for defending a punch.

Even when you are strong, there's a lot to be said for having accuracy, timing, speed, and movement ability to land that good shot.

Yes, because bodybuilding doesn't actually teach you any defensive skills. And you can't bodybuild your jaw/head.
