    Smile I just wanna tone...help!

    Hi-
so here is my deal...I have been going to the gym 3-4x per wk for the past 5 months...weight training and cardio (30-40min)....and my goal is to lose 10-15 lbs (I am at 120 and 5'3) while toning and adding lean muscle...certainly NOT GAINING any more weight. My diet is in order and so I think I am pretty good there....I also just started the p90x series but I want to add a protein shake and a fat burner to the mix. I should also add that I am somewhat sensitive to stims so I would need a burner w/ no stims or not super strong ones. Any suggestions??

I am thinking the ON Whey protein powder and REDuction (though it has stims I heard not harsh)...thoughts??

    Thanks for your input!!!

Sorry, but you're a bit screwed up Toning means gaining muscle. Gaining muscle means gaining scale weight. Now fat loss can offset muscle gains however the scale may not change a lot. Body composition and how you look however can drastically change.

If your diet is in order then you will lose body fat. No fat burners are needed. They should only be used as a last resort to get those final few pounds off. If you haven't been losing body fat then your diet is not on target as you think it is. Or you are using the wrong metric (the scale) to assess fat loss.

With your stats and how much you fat you think you need to lose, it would seem you're in the skinny-fat category. That is, your weight is fine but your body composition is off. I wouldn't lose any more than 5 pounds of fat before turning around and doing a lean bulk. Given what time of year it is, I'd even do the lean bulk now and then hit the leaning out in the spring. Forget PX90 for now. Get your cals up to a tad above maintenance and hit the weights hard. I can tell you from experience that losing body fat when you do not have enough lean mass only means you get smaller and lighter. But you will look the same! It's incredibly frustrating!

Freebirdmac hit it on the head...

There really is no "toning up" - only gaining muscle, losing fat (or a combination of both).

If you get your calories up (as F.B.M. suggested), and put 110% in the weight room, you can lose fat (by putting on lean muscle), and look more lean/defined.
