i dont find my power clean to be affected by what kind of shoes i wear, and i've tried several as well as in socks/barefoot.
my full clean and clean&jerk however will often do better with better support in the back of the shoe. but its up to you.

Pretty much, I've powercleaned 225 and powersnatched 70kg with sandals on, the only hard part with the powerclean was the traction on the platform cause my teammate GoJu likes to take a bath in chalk before lifting.

I can't lift in Flipflops/sandals. Tried it. I spent the summer in Russia and am currently studying now in Russia, and so many people, sometimes nearly everyone in the gym, here lift in flipflops. They have this thing about clean shoes in the gym and homes for that matter (very understandable given the condition of the streets in many places, everyone takes their shoes off before going inside). But training olympic lifts in sandals? No way.
The trainer at the gym I trained at this summer (small gym in southern Russia) used train the lifts, and is still pretty strong. He was working the desk one day (read: had been sitting for on his ass for a couple hours). Walked up and easily full snatched 75 kilos in flipflops. I almost just quit that day.

Living here is the actual experience. The summer was better though because we were in a small city in the deep south on the river. My gym was really small, so I got to know the people there really well. The admin there loved me and let me train whenever I wanted (a lot of gyms here only allow you go at certain times on certain days of the week and tend to be really expensive). I made A LOT of progress technique wise, no real significant strength gains though, which I think was climate related. St. Petersburg has been anticlimactic TBH.
EDIT: Ironically, this summer they let me use chalk when they had it, which was next to never. Now, across the street from me there's an outdoor store where I bought a big bag of chalk the day after I got here. And now that I finally have proper chalk, my gym won't let me use it. I secretly do anyway though

Honestly you would be better in any kind of flat sole shoe (skateboarding shoes) or even dress shoes.
OLY shoes are the best but if you have to wear something else then you want something with either a completely flat and solid sole or something with an elevated heel. There are some pairs of cross trainers or hiking shoes that are OK as well, and some of the crossfit guys sweat by the barefoot shoes (the ones that look like gloves for your feet). I believe that some of the Under Armor cross trainers (vertical movement) are similar to a 'poor mans olympic shoe'.
You can still train in the Nike's if you wanted to, but would have better stability with a different shoe.

Vibram Five Fingers = Crossfit shoes. I have a friend (yes bigtime crossfitter) who also swears by them. I've only tried them on, never trained in them.
BTW you're in Charlotte? That's awesome man! I have a few friends there and party up it up quite often in Charlotte. A lot of people from my city (Columbia, SC) go up there almost every weekend. I've def spent a good bit of time there. I really like that city.

That's them. I am not sure how the shoes are since I have never personally used them but on paper they look like they could be good for things like power cleans.
Do you train at SC Barbell? I come down to Columbia once in a while to work out there.

They look like they would fall apart, but apparently they are durable. My friend does the whole crossfit thing and runs marathons/distance races, and they seem to hold up quite well even on rough terrain. I like my Do-Wins though
No I trained at Brickhouse gym when I was there. Before that I was a place called "The Factory" (half of the ownership from the old Athlete Factory, the other half has the Athlete's Arena in Irmo). I've heard it's a good place. Do they have Oly coaches there? There's a guy at Brickhouse who trains olympic and I think that's where he said he also trained at. This was earlier this year tho in May before I left, and I didn't see him when I was home. Brickhouse is great though. Two platforms, bumpers, strongman equipment, everything. Great place and great people own it. I definitely miss it right now.
