What I don't understand is why you would get tested just to put that extra stress on yourself when you haven't even decided what you're going to do. I would think that anyone in the right mind would first decide:
1. I want to give him my kidney if it matches. If it doesn't, too bad.
2. I don't want to give him my kidney. Will not get tested.
Not
3. I am not sure whether or not I want to give him my kidney. Maybe I'll get tested and see what the results are. If it doesn't match, too bad. If it does, ffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. I need the Misc's advice on this.

Remember that they will only take part of your kidney, and in time, that part that was taken would recover back. for how long is a mystery.
OP,i suggest you not donate it. not being selfish but your quality of living will change, better donate it to a family member just in case. you dont have to sacrifice your life as well.

yeah. it's caused by the alloimmune/antigen responses.
to make it clear: the body can reject a compatible organ,or a very good match. why? remember that its our system, it doesnt want any foreign object going in it. it doesn't care if its gonna do good for it. all it knows is that it's an intruder and would try to kick it out.

they had a bunch of episodes about this in curb your enthusiasm where larry david was a match for richard lewis. it was funny.
on a more serious note, I have one kidney since birth. I think my nephrologist said that the medical history is better for those who give/lose a kidney than for those born with just one. I'm not exactly sure why. doctor said I didn't have to limit protein intake and didn't mention anything about alcohol. I don't drink like crazy anyway.

this is the #1 question for sure.
But here's the way I'd think about it.
The chances of your child/loved one needing a kidney down the road are extremely low. You have a chance to completely change another man's life RIGHT NOW. If we all lived life with extreme caution, we would never make any progress. When you have the chance to make a difference in your own, or another person's life, you have to do it. You don't want to live your life with regret. If this is someone who you truly care about then I would go for it. Either way, you're a good person for even considering it.

as a doner you need to go to the doctors are get a rundown of everything, my mother gave my father a kidney about 8 or so years ago and after about 2-3 years it started failing and hes back to dialysis for the rest of his life. Im not trying to sway you one way or another but you need all the info to really see if the risk is worth the reward in your situation.
Edit: By the way she would do it again regardless of it failing or not, that's just part of it all, go to specialists and find out everything.

Damn OP, you are a great friend to him.
If I was in your situation, I'd ask myself 'Will he make good use of the kidney and have a happy, productive life?'. If he doesnt and he seems like the type of person that will waste his life away being criminal I wont do it.I don't really care how much I lift, just how much I can look like I lift. u mad?

the liver grows back, not kidneys
he will be on immunosuppressive drugs the rest of his life to prevent rejection
sometimes there are rejection episodes, but they don't always result in destruction of the entire kidney
if you elect to do the surgery, it does hurt and you will feel like crap for 3-4 weeks but it should not impair you after that
your quality of living should not change unless there is a mistake in the surgery
drinking directly hurts the liver not really the kidney (although if you get dehydrated due to drinking, that can impact the kidney)
but everything in moderation (including protein)
it's one of the most altruistic things you can do in this life.Last edited by luddite; 10-17-2009 at 06:19 PM.

OP does he do home hemodialysis or does he go to a clinic? I worked in dialysis and my opinion would be:
1 what does he mean to you?
2 What do you consider a success from your gift? (Would 2 years treatment free be acceptable for "you".)
3 How does he handle his treatments now? (Does he watch his fluid intake? Does he adhere to his nutrition standards? All important to know. Be sure he is going to take care of himself and part of you.)
Just of few things to think about.

The way I see it OP, we all only have a few, legitimate chances in our lives to make a significant difference in the life of another, a group of people, or even the world. These oppurtunities don't present themselves to us very often, and we need to take advantage of them every time we can.
If it was my friend, and I was close to him/her for as long as you have been, the descision would be an honest no brainer to me. ****, I would do it if it reduced my life expectancy, because the quality and meaning of that reduced life would so far outweigh whatever an extra 10-15 years would provide.
I can tell your back on fourth on it, but I have a feeling I know which way you'll end up choosing. Would you do it before the wedding, or afterwards?

I've been living with one kidney since birth (serious). I just don't drink any alcohol or soda. Most of my intake consists of water. The only non-water beverages I drink are whatever protein or pre-workout supplement I mix with water. I don't even know what living with 2 feels like. I am not on dialysis, though.
Edit: I also don't intake a bunch of protein at once because it will give me the ****s. That is the only downside.🤡 Honk-Pilled 🤡

Good job bro. My mom got a kidney from one of her good friends last year, you can't do more than that as a friend.

also abit more of his history. He has had 2 kidneys given to him through his life, one from his mother and one from his step father. His mothers gave him 5 normal years and is step father gave him a couple of days.
So its scary thinkin mine might not help him, but if it does, he finally get to live his life.
The guy has not gone to the toilet like we all do for years, he cant even drink water half the time."I was born with a little bit of this, the rest of it i worked for" - Ronnie Coleman
