Pardon me but WTF?!
So I go down to the gym just now. Its a cardio day for me so I'm wanting to get on the elliptical. There's a woman on the other elliptical. She has turned on the tv and has it on the Food Network. Thats weird enough. But no, she also has her iPod stuck in her ears. Yet...she's watching this cooking show with an intense look on her face so I don't feel like I can ask her if I can change the channel. I tried...really tried to do my workout but after three minutes I just couldn't take it any more. I jumped off, got dressed and left. I'll go back in about a half an hour. Hopefully she'll be gone by then.

No and I'm a little freaked out. It made me feel dirty. Usually I don't mind that so much but this was a different kinda dirty altogether.

Did she even know how to change the channel? Would she have noticed that you had done so?
Stoopid questions, I know, but what can I say...

Most gyms have the TV's sound running over an fm station so she may have been listening to the show on her iPod. As for her choice of station I love the food network, I have learned allot about cooking watching that and there are so many recipes that you learn that can be easily modified to be healthy, or at least Keto!

Oh she would have noticed. She was watching the tv with the same look a starving wolf gives a fresh carcass. I was afraid to tap her on the shoulder to ask if I could change the channel for fear that she might eat my hand.

This is a small gym at work. We don't have that kind of tech setup. She was listening to music while watching the show. This is what tripped me out.
And now I know who it is thats been watching the food network while they work out. I usually go in a little later than I did today and when I turn on the tv its always on that channel. I always wondered the hell was doing that.

Next time wait till she takes her 3 minute cigarette break and THEN change the channel.

Oh hell no, I'm to busy running all in all I do not get the people who watch TV/read while working out seems like it would distract you from your goals imo but then again I listen to music so maybe they think the same of me but I find a fast/hard beat makes me work faster and harder.

I'm the opposite. I don't see how people can do cardio without something to distract them.

Maybe you could have closed your eyes and concentrated on your own workout?

I'm sorry, but if you would allow what's on TV in the gym to cause you to walk out and abandon your workout..... well maybe you should rethink your motivation to exercise.
The gym would have to be on fire to drive me out when it's time to lift. And I would probably try to get one more set in anyways!

What gym did you say you worked out at again? : )
But hmm...if girls can put up with us watching football/baseball/bb on the gym TVs, I can handle the view or food network...it's not like I'm there to watch TV anyways.

I'd probably ignore the fire alarm, until I saw flames, or smelled smoke. But the earthquake could be a problem, especially if I were squatting or benching. I could see the potential for disaster there, so I would probably wait it out and try to get my sets in between the aftershocks.

First of all, I'm talking about cardio...not lifting. I can lift no matter whats going on. But cardio is different for me in that I don't enjoy it at all. But I do it and I do it with intensity. The only catch is that I have to have something else to think about other than the unpleasantness of the cardio. TV is the only thing that really works for me and when it comes to tv there's really just a few things that I find interesting enough to distract me from the pain of cardio. The Food Network doesn't cut it. In fact, I find it somewhat demotivating. My gym is at work and I have a loose schedule. I have the option of coming back later. If I didn't I would have just toughed it out. But I don't have to do that. I can just leave and come back at a time when my workout can be as pleasant as it can be. And why shouldn't I do this? Its not like I'm skipping the workout altogether.

Lol, thanks. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to have rationalized other than the decision to put my workout off for a half hour so I could watch something interesting on the History Channel instead of some chick cooking supper but hey, I'll take reps where I can get them.

It's later than you think
I usually switched the station TO the Food Network when I was doing Cardio before I changed gyms. I would then hide the remote. It didn't bother me to see that on the screen, but you're damn right I made some people just suffer...
