Commercial Gym Revisited: Get me out of here! LOL...
Spent a weekend in Boston with my lovely wife and on SAT, we felt like using a regular gym instead of the tiny throw in "exercise" room in the Hotel.....
now, my wife belongs to NYSports club, so, she was able to use Boston Sports club without charge, and I had to pay 15 as a guest.....
alright: off she goes to her beloved aerobic machines and I stroll into the weight room....
Well, I have to say, this was a fairly big place and had lots of interesting equipment...even with my spoiled narrow minded way of doing things in my home gym, I was able to find tons to do.....
as always, I am VERY cautious in this situation, as the last thing I need is an injury or pull from something different than the "groove" my muscles are used to......
so, all of that is fine and dandy except for one thing: I am just way too much of an over-opinionated hack to watch everyone butchering the art of working out! LOL......
I buttoned my lip and swore not to say a word to anyone relating to form, and I didn't...but what a mess!
actually, incredible, and there have been far too many posts on here about this.....so you don't really need another one from me......
I will just say the strangest one of them all was a very well built black gent who was supersetting strict straight arm lateral raises with straight bar barbell curls ( ???????????), hey, but, it might have been in some magazine or something, that eluded me! LOL.....
the worst , as usual, was guys doing 1/5 to 1/4 leg movements, especially on the leg press....loading up those plates like a caveman and then barely letting the rack go down more than 6 inches or so......
it would be SO hard for me to keep my opinions to myself in that type of environment.....
When I went to join my wife, she was cooling down on a treadmill, and right next to her was this Asian girl with a virtually perfect ass and legs ( no disrespect to my missus, lol)....and there were others.....
made me glad that in the weight room, the only distraction was the Patriots game that they had on Wide screen TV......
I will say this also: some polite chaps up there in Boston: everyone was either putting the towel over the benches or wiping them with a towel after finishing, and EVERYONE was putting every single weight back in the rack after using them........
interesting, as always, but I will stick with my home gym.......

That's about the only thing worthwhile in the 'commercial' gyms, people toweling things off. Oh, the joys of traveling.

I had to re-read this to be sure I wasn't hallucinating. Polite? New Englanders? The guys you saw must have been from out of town as well. Probably some idiots from La La Land in town for the baseball game.

Interesting post, John, and reminiscent of many of my own experiences over the years in many gyms. I too stick to doing it at home.

I've never been to a NYSC or BSC or WSC,; I have been in one, and only one Workout World! (aka WoW! ). I have watched the goings on in a Gold's Gym in Long Branch, at the beachfront.
Give me my old warehouse, brick wall, nails coming through the ceiling, can't-use-the-fans-to-save-energy, hot as hell in summer and freeze your ass off in winter, tons of freeweights, scream all you want privately owned gym (yes chalk).

Much as I dislike work, that's why I like the gym in my office.
It has a degree of civility and is SUPER cheap too.

You mean watching the Angels beat the Red Sox... Good times!!!
But, to the O.P., I find your thread interesting. I for one lift at a commercial gym and have found great use. I too, hate it when I see someone lifting half assed and it concerns me that there may be an injury coming their way. I feel that they should have a roving P.T. that will walk around and give advice or at least be a safety monitor. Not just the initial tour to get you to sign up.
However, there are always going to be good and bad anywhere you go.

Wow $15 guest fee seems excessive. Usually I have been able to get in most gyms for free as long as only a day or two(if I tell them I am from out of town visiting). I don't think I could work out seeing the NFL game on in the weight area(would want to watch it lol). At leas tthey have manners there racking the weights.

I was thinking about the laughs in the weight room. But.....
Now that you pointed all that out, I would have paid $30.
