Another Decade Comes To a Close
Geez, I remember when each decade was greeted with an air of futuristic optimism. 70's, 80's, 90's. "These are the nineties, man."
And now the 2000's.
It is weird to be remembering all that contained within my lifetime. What a perspective!

Probably just guilt. Regrets for the things we could have, or should have done earlier in our lives. And now that we have the end in sight, so to speak, it's hard not to think about the way things could have been, or what things would be like if we had taken a different path.
Yeah, it's not an easy thing to admit, but I get those feelings from time to time. I try to spend as little time as possible dwelling on it. There is still so much to do in life, and I can still accomplish great things, or at least the things I would like to do. And it helps to think that some of the mistakes I have made along the way were learning lessons for me, and have made me a better person over all.
But yeah...... it's easier to say it's just a clock in the head with the hands turning fast......

Your probably right. I think I feel guilty for not having done more things in my life including missing time with kids because of spenidng so much time with my business.

I seem to have less regrets though, because I realize I am where I am from how I've lived, and I'm cool with it. In some ways good, others not so much.
What gets to me is knowing I really only have a couple more decades left after having gone through 5 of them. When you are young in your 20's you don't really think about life as being so finite.
We have hopes for our children and the world for the future, and have done what we can, but our influence will only reach so far. It will soon be all theirs.

If it makes you feel any better...
I just finished a shift @ my work where there is a complex of 50 teenagers that have been either been abused, neglected or both.
Their parents and loved ones apparantly didn't give 2 sh*ts about their lives and now the govt. has to.
Speaking as a youth counsellor, if I or someone else like me is not looking after your kids...you probably did an excellent job raising them.

I remember back in '69 thinking the '70s sounded so futuristic. Why not. We'd been to the moon not that long ago and with three assasinations and a war that was dividing the country, the '60s weren't thought of as the cool, exciting decade as maybe they are now. Rebellious, yes. Most of us probably thought, hoped that the next decade would be better.
Now, (from a Buick commercial) it's good we can refer to the next year as 'twenty ten' & not this two thousand and... stuff. Seems only yesterday Y2k was a catch term.
The (sort of) down side, now when they put out statistical predictions; you know, when they say "By the year" and it's usually 2050 or something. I know I'll be dead. Flip side, I won't have to worry about them.
If you think how old, creaky, antiquitated 1909 sounds; we're those people, compared to the group to come to see the next century turn.
Fwiw, the next decade won't change til 1/1/2011. Until then, we're still in the twenty aughts.

What timing! Earlier this year, my folks gave me a VHS tape they've had for over 20yrs. It was my tape that had been mislabeled and contained footage from x-mas of 86' & 86' that was taken at their home with my new $1500 RCA camcorder (they were large & pricey at the time and I always had to have stuff like this). Anyway, as I finally watched it while putting it on DVD too, I realized some "scary" stuff. Like, I have no children yet. And my wife (who is 7yrs younger than me) is 21yrs old in 86', and that is the same age as my oldest child now. I had a full head of hair , mention getting my first commission check which was a flashback in time to that whole ladder climbing phase, did a quick comparison of how my folks have aged since that time.......and it was kind of a "right in your face" reminder of how short life is. I mean, it was suddenly as if "this is my old home movie, not my folks'.
As the opening of the film panned my apartment I was also reminded of the "materialistic phase" that most of us go through. A phase that would last me at least another decade from that time. And then I kind of realized what season it is right now. And how we just transitioned from Summer and we're barely into Fall, and how my life is actually doing the same.
Ty, I think each decade probably is being treated with an air of optimism.....but by others. It's just.....kinda, sorta not so much our time anymore, you know? Oh, lots of great times ahead of us...just not so much our time anymore. /memory lane

Again, wise and true words. On these last 2 sentences I get this feeling with the new demographic I hire; I see that it's their world in many ways and I'm - all of a sudden-seeming - the 'old guy' at 46 and not as much in vogue in many ways to do with my appearance, attitude, ethic, expectations.

My Dad was born in 1925 and passed away just about 2 years ago.
His health declined in the last few years as he was approaching his 80's. He once told me that he seriously thought he was immortal until he started getting sick. I think we all feel that way to some extent.
Imagine the things he saw in his life!! I waas with him for the new years eve on 2000. He told me stories that his Dad has passed to him about how excited he was when the calendar turned to 1900.
I remember on July 4th 1976 me and my brothers reminded him that he had been alive almost 25% as long as the country. He strangely didnt seem to impressed with our math.
I will be 48 next month, even though i have had injuries from training just about all year, I still feel like I am immortal.
I also miss my Dad.

Hey, it's OK to be melancholy, reflective, introspective, etc... Hell, I think it's what keeps us all grounded throughout life. So be motivated, if just for the fact that us awesome O-35ers have a lot in common . It's always good to be alive .

Time sure flies when you're having fun! Ten years! It doesn't seem that long ago that the entire world was quite astir over the new century dawning. Funny thing, it wasn't all that fun, really.

I feel like that to ty, I often think how am I gonna handle old age? when I'm not able to do the things I do now....I see it all day at work so that doesn't help but it has made me think and it's impossible to forget when your reminded every day.
It creeps up on you and before you realize it your up there and not getting any younger.

I have decided that this job with the public school district(even if I get a promotion) will be my last. I want to put in my time to get 10+ years so I can get the full benefits + SS. Never thought like this before.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Funny; my father was born in 1914 (!), lived through the Spanish Flu epidemic, the Golden Age of Sports (and met a lot of famous people--just lucked into it, I guess) went through the war, raised a family, passed in 1985. My mother was born in 1922 and had a pretty amazing life in her own way. I always thought my Mum would live another ten years; it was only after her last visit to Japan that she said it wasn't going to happen again (the visiting, I mean) and that signalled the end of OUR era. She passed on almost two years ago.
When I was in my twenties I thought I was going to live forever; after my seizure in my early thirties, I found that it wasn't the case and I wasn't bulletproof. I still have my injuries, still train, still think of the future. Life's too short to dwell on the past, although, like Crupiea, I miss my folks.
Call me starry-eyed but I still think the future is going to be better. After all, we "bombed" the moon--it's still there!
