How long does chicken breast last frozen?

I just went to the store and they were having a special of Pilgrim's Pride chicken breast: 5lbs for $5.00. I bought two packages, but I'm cutting, and want to stock up. According to http://whatscookingamerica.net/Infor...eezerChart.htm, I can put them in the freezer for nine months, but I am kind of weary. I don't want to stock up and then have the chicken go bad. What is your experience with raw, packaged chicken breast and how long do they usually last in the freezer? The sell by date on them was for Oct. 23, 2009. I want to buy a couple of months worth of chicken. lol, Thanks!

    Go nuts.

    I get 10lbs for 20 dollars frozen.

I mean, assuming you eat around 4-8 oz a day, you can go trough 5lbs in a week or 2.

Frozen chicken can last a long long time, atleast 4-5 months.

I honestly have no idea since it never lasts long enough in the freezer before I eat it. But I buy about 20 lbs at a time and eat about 2-4 lbs a week. From what I've heard, as what the people above me say, they last for at least 5-6 months.

It shouldn't be in your freezer long enough to go bad but to put a timeline on it, I would say don't let it sit in there longer than 5 months.

Poultry will last up to a year in a deep freezer. It will last even longer but you might get that freezer burn taste. Our grocery had it on sale and we stocked up our freezer with 180 pounds of chicken. 2 bucks a pound for premium skinless boneless breast is too good to pass up. I go through 5 pounds a week easily.
I Rep back always. Put it in comment.

I've eaten chicken and other meat thats been frozen for over 2 years (old man in my granparents trailer park passed away and had a meat locker). The only thing I noticed is that it becomes very gritty and slightly harder to chew but it must have not been that bad since I ate it all.

Side note: the freexing of meat is not exactly what destroys it; rather being in a unit thats temperature is constantly fluctuating ie. a home freezer that is opened 1-4 times a day. This destabilizes the protein and other molecular bonds giving it a diffrent feel like freezer burn.

thanks guys for all the replies! i go through about 5lbs in prob. a week and a half, so i am going to stock up. my fridge is a small apt. fridge, and the freezer is tiny, but I'm going to try and buy enough to stock up. and yeah, i'm pretty sure i will be able to eat it before it goes bad if the freezer life is around 5-9ish months. thanks!!
