    Arms going numb while sleeping

Does anyone else have problems with arms going numb while sleeping? This is new to me and didnt start until a few months after I have ben going to the gym and started getting results in muscle growth in my arms/shoulders. Im curious if this is caused by a change in my anatomy.

Thanks for any replies to this.

I would say it's likely neck issues because I have similar issues.

I bet it happens when you have your arm bent right? It's because your biceps are getting bigger I have the same issue just straighten your arm and the numbness goes away.

I will on occasion wake up with an arm having "gone to sleep." It's a very strange sensation when it just lays there and refuses to move! LOL I have found that it's more a matter of body position.

could very well be...had the same problem years ago (work related)- a couple trips to a chiropractor and i haven't had the same problem since then.

a lot of problems with joints (mainly shoulders and hips) are more spine related than folks realize.
thank God for my dogs...i owe them my life.

Mine always do.. have for years; I sleep on my side with my arm under my pillow and they go to sleep/numb out regularly. I'm sure this isn't the best thing in the world for growth....

Also will do so if I have my elbows on the table. But they should, because it's bad manners

Happens all the time to me. It's never fun when it happens to both arms at the same time. Also, my hands start to tingle if I do back squats for to long. It must be my huge biceps cutting of the blood flow. lol
CHEST, CHEST, CHEST........ I have a wimpy chest, but I'm gonna fix that starting right now!

Edit: I'm having a hard time with making my chest grow, so I decided to shrink my waist instead!

"welcome to the jungle..." This happened to me all the time when i lifted younger in life, went away and then came back as I added some size to me again in the last few years. Funny thing for me is that it is always worse on the arm on the top. I sleep on my side to stay in bed with my wife. Ok i may snore a bit on my back. The hard part for me is when both are asleep and my pager is going off in the middle of the night

When I was in high school having grown longer then my bed my lower legs would fall asleep at night. At that time we had a intercom system in our house that my dad would set an alarm to wake me for school every day and I was expected to get my a$$ upstairs and reset the alarm for him ASAP, that way he knew I was up. To make a long story short lets just say the first step on those mornings was a doosy!!!

My arms don't doze off but just my hands. I'm a side sleeper and it's usually the "under" arm that has the tingley hand. Rolling over usually fixes it. Lately I've taken to sleeping with two pillows to take some weight off of my shoulders. That didn't seem to have any affect, one way or the other on the hand issue. I guess old(er) age is creeping in.

This is likely the case with OP, basically you cant do do this anymore, you have to sleep with your arms straight/no weight on them. I remember a post made by OldSupe (I think) where he actually had to splint his arms straight before bed to get used to it.

My hands are more affected than my arms. When I first started lifting, only half of my hand would be asleep. Quite different to me than when my arms used to fall asleep.

I used to have this for years before i started working out. Do some overhead work and it might go away, it did for me.

Yes I did and it only took a few nights to retrain them. When you bend the arms usually more then a 90 degree, they will start to go numb. It is more of a guy thing then girl as rigorous lifting is what caused it. I would say you have no, back, spinal nerve issue with this.

I used to get this quite often until I changed over to a memory foam mattress.
I've not had any problems since then.

Memory foam topper has helped me a lot. But I'm a tummy sleeper and it'll still get me. I'm always afraid when I wake up and try to roll over to get blood going back into my arm that I'm going to break it if I'm not careful

Every night. Wakes me up. When I straighten my arms, it goes away. The worst, apart from it waking me up, is when it happens just before the alarm goes off, and I'm flapping at the snooze button like a deranged seal.
They say abs are made in the kitchen, but I don't know if that's true. I'm always in the kitchen and I ain't seen no abs yet.

That used to happen to me years ago when I was training hard and had some sizable arms. I'm hoping to get that problem back soon.

I remember that I ended up propping up my arms with some extra pillows that seemed to help. I was inspired to try that by seeing some pictures of the huge Pro BBers trying to sleep before a contest and they had extra pillows nestled all around their shoulders and arms.

Ah, the price of being big.

We've got a Templar Mattress, I cant recommend it enough.
I've never suffered from back problems but my wife has in the past and the new mattress has helped her.
That was the main reason we decided to get one, it stopping my arms going numb was an added bonus.

Hmm I don't know if this brand sells in USA. Do you have a web site for them? How much did it cost you? Did the mattress come with foundation also? Thanks.

Same problem here. I usually wake up with a few numb fingers if I find a good position. If not, its my entire arm. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Yeah, I always meant to search the threads for this topic because my chances of waking up with numb arm(s) became noticeably greater, coincidently, right when I started lifting weights a year plus ago.

got onto this post very late, but yes, a common problem with us lifters....

as Clive said, though, the right combination of certain mattress/pillow could help relieve this problem....

also: it is common for this to occur sleeping on one side, but not the other....

used to happen alot to me when I was squatting heavy. I think it was the overloading of the spine, recurrent back issues and the angle that my arms were in during the squat. Once I stopped doing reps with over 500lbs of weight my back felt better, my neck pain decreased, and the tingling/ numbness went away.
