References/Sources
Specifically, first hand accounts one recieves when talking to a person in a certain field/area.
I recently got into a discussion about Cuba and their healthcare system. I have two friends who both worked in the hospitals in Cuba and much of my information is from them.
The person I was debating with claimed that the info I provided was hearsay and could not be treated as fact, therefore my point was moot. I responded by stating that my information was no different than a reporter stating information recieved from an interview.
Anyways, the debate went no where but it left me wondering about the validity of my sources. What is considered valid? If not, what could I have done differently?
FWIW, I even offered to have my friend post his first hand experiences but the other guy gave the excuse that "it's just one person's experience, not ALL cubans".

Well, you may be quoting first-hand information, but that makes you second-hand so nobody can use you as a source. It's just hearsay. Also, we have no way of confirming your information unless you can get us an affidavit from your friends. We don't know if you're making it up or not.
I also know somebody who moved down there last year to go to med school on a full scholarship. I'll try to find out from her what it's like.

Yeah, the whole hearsay and proving my source was why he was writing off my argument. I was going to get my friend to post but the guy didn't even care 
FWIW, we were discussing Michael Moore's movie SICKO.

The reason for all of this is the simple fact that plural of anecdote is not data.
If you want to look further into it, look at biased sample fallacies.

So how would one go about gather information on Cuba's healthcare?
Other than actually asking the citizens and doctors, I'm not sure what else I can go on.
