Experienced computer brahs
Bout to buy all the parts off of newegg to put together my own rig here this week, and I'm trying to figure out the best CPU heatsink (non liquid cooled) on the market. I hear the Coolermaster V8 is one of the best. Reps (even though they aren't worth much) to someone who can link me a better heatsink than this.

No sense in buying a rediculous heatsink unless you'll be doing crazy overclocking...

Even the most top of the line fans all range around $100 mark, so anything that can keep my system running cooler under performance gaming is a good thing in my book. If I was overclocking I would liquid cool

Thing is, i OC my E8400 at 3.6ghz. I have a stock HSF, an 8800GT thats overclocked with no cooling support. It stays cool even when gaming...
That HSF is supposed to be good. If you don't mind noise try something I did... On my last computer (pentium 4 2..8ghz) I bought a decent zalman HSF and a tornado case fan. I ripped the casing off the fan, drilled some holes and attached it to the zalman. I had my P4 up to 4ghz... **** sounded like an airport though. (edit: nvm it was 3.6ghz, the e8400 i can get to 4ghz with stock hsf)

I used to have a Thermaltake like this with a huge 120mm fan on it and I loved it. At 16dba it is quiet yet moves a good amount of air. If you want you can even mount a second 120mm fan to augment the one on there for a stout push/pull configuration. One thing though is that this is a big heat sink so keep that in mind.

From what I have researched, benchmarks on the I7's are higher at the competative phenom price range.
On the surface it appears that AMD is the better deal, but when you look at the benchmarks, higher numbers are achieved with lower GHz from the i7. Like a i7 2.8GHz performance= 3.0 GHz Phenom II, and they are both about the same price

I agree with someone who already posted, unless you are planning to OC there isn't a need to buy a different heatsink.

Check out this list of parts... I always use it as a basis when building myself a new rig.

The Zalman, because of its heat pipe design. Make sure there is enough room inside of your case, too. These heatsinks may either come very close to the power supply, depending on your case, or the memory or expansion cards, depending on your motherboard. I had a 2.2ghz Athlon 64 running at 2.7ghz with the Zalman, but I do NOT overclock anymore. Just pay for the chip you want and put a nice cooler on it; it will last for over a decade.

but the thing is, the i970 is mutliple steps up from the x4 965, they aren't even in the same field of competition.
phenomx4 965 = intel quad core 2.66 (which is less than $300)

Yeah, Intel has been whoopin ass lately... However, the amd stuff is generally way cheaper... Like the top of the line intel is $1000 or something and the top of the line amd is generally around $500... The performance difference looks big on paper, but really isn't much in the real world. Also, most amd processors are highly overclockable.
edit: hadn't looked at the list in a while... like 3 weeks ago, amd had the best midrange and low end processor... I see intel took over now..

Hope you don't mind the LED light. There is a combo deal with that one if you also buy Arctic Silver, which you should if you haven't already, until December 31. This is also the biggest one they make. That's about as cool as you'll get without water. I hope your case is aluminum, too.

Do this:
solid state drive
fanless video card
quiet cpu cooler
You'll have a fast setup and 0 noise.

All you need is a case with holes opposite where the cpu fan is and then one of those plastic tunnel things to screw onto it so that it gets air straight from the outside. I stole one from my dads computer and it seriously reduced my computers temperature by at least 5 C celcius. To get 5 C from a new cpu heatsink you'll need to spend another $100 for a better one.
