They are these little tubes that are 100cal/25g protein
I bought a box cause they were cheap and seems like a good way to sneak extra protein into a meal as its literally 1 drink and its down. Was unsure about the main protein in it though. Anyone know anything about it? Ill list ingredients here.
It calls the protein (Actinase)
Patent pending blend of enzymatically hydrolyzed(predigested) collagenic protein isolate, Whey protein isolate, and casein protein isolate(milk)

Protein shots??? Any good?

for HYDROLYZED collagen protein the absorption rate is very high, like in the 90's. i don't know where everyone here is getting this info that hydrolyzed collagen has a low absorption rate --maybe it's because unhydrolyzed collagen (i.e. regular collagen) doesn't have the best absorption rate.
the most common protein supplement used in medical environments is hydrolyzed collagen protein. it is often prescribed when someone has had gastric surgery of some sort (i.e. stomach, digestive system) or when someone is suffering from stomach ulcers. this is because the protein absorbs quite well in the small intestine, therefore it can pass through the stomach without aggravating it. it is also often prescribed to geriatric (really old) patients as a protein supplement for the same reasons (takes very little effort to digest).
of interest is that hydrolyzed collagen supplements are often marketed as a non-stimulant based weight loss assistance product. you are supposed to take a liquid collagen supplement on an empty stomach, right before going to sleep. it's supposed to help you burn fat and build lean muscle.
one of the theories goes that the amino acids help to raise your Growth Hormone levels at night, and while that is possible i have not yet read any non-company sponsored studies that support this. if it does help you lose fat and build lean muscle it could just be similar to taking a casein protein shake before going to bed --meaning it helps to keep your body in an anabolic state when it would usually be in a catabolic state.
the canadian company that started marketing hydrolyzed collagen as a nighttime weight loss product tells some story about how the originator worked as some sort of agricultural engineer (or something like that) and was working on the problem of chickens raised in giant factory farms were losing muscle and gaining fat from lack of mobility. he started to experiment with different feeds and found that adding hydrolyzed collagen made a big difference in building lean muscle in the chickens (which is good for sales as muscle is the chicken meat that brings the most money). as this became standard practice in the chicken industry, the guy who discovered this, who was overweight, decided to experiment on himself and got good results and started his own company to market it.
now that's all good and all, but it's also a very neat and cute story that could be totally made up by some marketing department somewhere, so take it with a grain of salt.
so to conclude, i don't know if hydrolyzed collagen helps you lose weight at night or helps to raise your GH levels, but i do know for a fact that hydrolyzed protein is easily absorbed by the body and has been used and is used very commonly in medical environments just for that reason.
