hernia surgery recovery times
any of you gentlemen ever had to get a hernia operated on? and if so, how long were you kept out of the gym. Im sure my doc will give me a estimated time period when i g in for a consultation on Tuesday, but i just wanted to get some real world feedback.
I will absolutely follow his guidelines, its just that my curiosity is peaked.

I had mine operated in late March this year. Bed rest for about 3 days, then another week of increased activity. Post Op it was amazingly debilitating. Maybe 2 weeks post I could do light cardio, treadmill stuff. Week 3 was light machine stuff, chest presses. After 1 month I was about 75% back to normal upper body lifting. I was in no hurry to any lower body or ab training.
Today I am 6 months post. 100% healed with no pain. And a dead sexy 3 inch scar.

3-4 days bed rest another week or so of light to no activity is normal. All depends on what you have exactly.

About 2-3 months before I felt comfortable going back into the gym for any weight work and another 3 before I was comfortable doing deadlifts. I didn't see the point of rushing and retearing the spot.
You doing laproscopic(sp?) I recovered pretty well from surgery for normal activities..just not the gym.

That's close to where a good buddy of mine had one. For almost a week he could barely get out of bed, but if I'm not mistaken he took about 3 months off from lifting. I could be wrong, though, may have been 2 months.

I honestly thought I had one last year. I had some lower abdominal pain that made it almost impossible to lift. Are you sure it's a diagnosed hernia?
I finally broke down, went to the doctors and found out I had a severe lower ab strain. That hurt like crazy and had me doing only about half the things I would normally do in the gym.
I couldn't imagine having surgery for something like that. Thankfully I took about a week off, then took it light for another 2-3 weeks and then I began to work back up. It stank though.

im sure, there is a giant bulge in my ballsack bigger than both of my testes combined, as well as another big lump above.
its never bothered me while lifting, just while playing sports.
doc said it was the biggest bulge he had seen in some time (not referring to my kawk)

I have a hernia, but apparently it's not big enough to get fixed. (serious) The pain associated with leg press is horrible.

I also have the same problem but without the pain. The doc says its not worth the surgery because it is too small. It sucks though because i know what awaits in the future.
Good luck on the surgery OP. I had a HUGE inguinal hernia like yours(other side). The doc said i probably had it for a good 4-8 years. I had the open surgery and was out for about a month to 2 months. One thing ive learned researching about hernias is that everyone heals different. You could be fine within a month to 6 months. Mine was taken care of about 6 years ago and it doesnt bother me at all unless something digs into the spot where i had the surgery. Its a very sharp pain. Anyway good luck and fast healing.

Mine was lapro but the doctor made an incision in my lower stomach area that might has well have been open.. I was like wtf.. you said an inch not 2.
Open will probably take a longer recovery time.

buddy of mine just got his surgery 3 weeks ago. doc told him to stay away from physical activity for a month. he's been going to the gym since last week. lifting light.
with him, they inserted a balloon to lift the skin and when they tried to deflate it, the air went into one of his balls. swelled up, then they had to squeeze it out to get it back into the balloon. not sure if your going to experience any of this but you should mention it to your doc anyways. apparently, your balls hurt after for awhile if this happens.

At first I thought I was going to be able to wait a little while to get the surgery, but that wasnt the case after i had a consult with the hernia doc.
I'll be getting it operated on the 15th, and ill let you all know how my recovery goes.

I analyze disability claims for a living. Based on my experience and medical resources that I have at my disposal, the guidelines for returning to heavy occupations (which should equate to gym lifing) is 12 weeks for open repair. In other words, if a doctor states that a person cannot return to work for 12 weeks and the person has to do alot of lifting at work, we would approve his disability claim that long with no questions. However, I have seen people get released as early as 6 weeks post op. Perhaps with your young age and general fitness level, you will fall on the earlier end of the spectrum.
I wish you the best with your surgery and recovery.

I could certainly do that, what section do you recommend posting it in?
I'll be having my surgery the 15th, so the log would likely start shortly thereafter.

cool, i could do it in this section.
if someone bitches about it being in this section, ill say i had your approval and they will back down
I will absolutely lend my ongoing feedback though, as this is a bad situation for a lifter to be in and good ppl like Velocity Rob have gone out of their way to help out future hernia patients, and I hope to be able to do the same.
As for my mind state on the injury, Im actually happy. It will be a nice change to re access things and give my body a much needed break from the stress and the heavy amounts of food. This fits the old cliche: a blessing in disguise.
