You're over complicating a simple correlation. No one is saying that low self-esteem is a simple thing; obviously, understanding how such low self-esteem came about requires a knowledge of complicated and individualised personal histories, not to mention genetics and individual brain biochemistry.

However: women who score poorly on tests for self-esteem have been correlated with more promiscuous behaviour. The correlation in the studies is a fact. The interpretation is not; that's a theory. And I think it's a pretty powerful theory.

I think some posters are getting "correlation" and "causation" mixed up. The theory says there is a correlation, meaning they are linked, not that low-self esteem is the direct CAUSE to sexual promiscuity.

And, it makes perfect sense that a male with high self-esteem would be more promiscuous, as men are biologically driven to have sex with many partners to spread their gene and continue their line for generations. Women, who are more RELATIONAL than men, seek and actuall NEED to be loved/wanted, so, women with low-self esteem (whether ugly or pretty) can temporarily find that need of being wanted in sexual partners, "well, if he's having sex with me, he must want me, and that means I'm important" The problem is after the episode, the man leaves and then the woman feels empty again and the cycle repeats.
