Geelong (CATS) - AFL premiers 2009!
What a game. What-a-game!
Talk about a nail-biter til the end.

Saints had there chances, couldnt kick straight for goal was their problem and Riewold was well held by Taylor. If Riewold doesnt fire up, Saints usually lose. Having said that though, this is the reason the cats are a great team, even if they arent playing all that well, they are always close enough to pull off the win. They just grind away and stick to the game plan no matter what. Was an awesome game to watch.

I agree. As a long time saints fan since 1990, they had there chances early on, missed it and it came back to bite them.
The goal that was really a poster was very bad by the goal umpire. It could have been all the difference between a win and a loss to St.Kilda.

I agree LJ about the mistake by the goal umpire, but when you have twice as many inside 50's as the opposition, have I think 8 or so more shots at goal, allot of easy ones and miss, its gonna cost you against a team like the cats. Im a Hawks fan but I was really hoping for a Saints win today. OH, maybe next year for them.

Its Aussie talk Ron, dont worry bout it, would take me all night to convert it to English. The Aussie Rules Football final was today, similar your superbowl. You know, 100,000 screaming fans at the ground and the rest of the country watching it on TV, we are talking about the game.

I love the AFL and wish it were shown more often in the US. I have not seen it on Setanta this year. Very underrated sport. More Entertaining than Baseball and Basketball combined IMO.

Very sad to see the Saints go down. I'm a Lions supporter myself (being an ex-Brisbane boy) but St Kilda is my current place of residence so the Saints are my "second team". I just hope they don't have wait another 12 years for another go.

I haven't followed AFL since I lived in Victoria decades ago. But when I did I was a St Kilda fan, so kind of sad to seem them lose (mind you they were usually the losers when I followed them 30 years ago).

I love Aussie rules. Used to have a weekly highlights show on in the US but I think it got axed. Still a little confused about how they set up the defenses. Is it a straight man to man or are there guys that kind of sweep like in football (soccer)?

Its man on man but sometimes teams will take a man out of the forwards and put him into defence to stop the run of a dangerous opposition forward and to assist his defensive players. The mid field players have opponents as well but these guys usually play apart from each other. The mid field also has what are called taggers. These guys are specialists at stopping the best opposition mid fielders from getting the ball and it doesnt necassarily mean they ave to get the ball themselves, there main role is to stick to the opposition player like sh#t to a blanket and stop him from getting the ball. Its complicated for people to understand if they havent been brought up watching or playing the game.

Thanks, makes sense, sort of like in soccer, stop the attack at midfield and you break up the service to the guys up front. Next time I get to see a match I'll understand. One more question, I get the impression it would be important to be pretty tall to be good at that sport, is that correct?

No probs, you pretty much got it right. Most guys are between 6'3" to 6'5" tall but there are players around the 5'10" to 6'. The smaller guys are known as crummers, there job really is to be at the fall of the ball and clear it away from the pack when an umpire bounces it and it gets tapped out by the big guys or to be at the drop of the ball if 2 big guys go for a contested mark (catch) and neither of them catches it. You will find that allot of mid fielders fall into the smaller catagory except for the ruckman who is usually the biggest guy in the team (he's the one who taps the ball out when an umpire bounces it or throws it up). The biggest guy playing atm is around 7'1" or 7'2" and he plays for a team called Fremantle . These guys look allot smaller on TV than they actually are.

Melbourne (Storm) - NRL premiers 2009
...and history repeats itself.
The Cats (AFL) and the Storm (NRL) are premiers.
Couldn't ask for a better ending to the footy season.
...and to RonGoon... nevermind, its complicated.
