Homemade power rack
Hay guise.
My brother is a High School wood shop and metals shop teacher and im planning on having him/his students make me a power rack as a project. Im also thinking about having them make me a flat bench also. Id like to incorporate a high pulley into the rack as well for pulldowns, tricep pressdowns, etc...
Im wondering if anyone has ever successfully made their own squat rack, or have a good plan for this? What size steel should i use? Dimensions? Thickness of the steel?
Im planning on using it for squats and also use it for my pressing movements. Any comments, ideas, and any first hand knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Dan

Fair enough your going to let your brother make it for you but i wouldn't trust my life in a rack built by high school kids who are using it as a learning project. My advice would to do lots of testing before actual use (drop a loaded barbell onto the supports multiple times ect.)

screw the pulleys and tricep extensions. Check out Rip's starting strength (you can download the e-book) and he gives a picture and dimension for his.

I was just going to mention that the user BRUTUSPLAC makes everything out of wood. Besides him a bunch of people have made wooden power racks out of wood in the workout equipment section.

Here's my stuff. I build the power rack, dip station, and chinup station all this summer. The power rack has adjustable safety pins and 4 sets of j hooks. I also raised the base off the ground about two inches for attaching bands. If you dont have a place to hold your weights you could just get pallets and take them apart and put them back together so that they fit the weights, thats what I did.
