If you get stuck on finding somewhere near you, call the people at Tyesley. Unless things have changed, the PL arm of BWLA (used to be BAWLA and is the UK affiliate of the IPF) is based from Tyesley.

To quote the GBPF site
"The GBPF was formed out of the powerlifting section of the British Weightlifters Association (BWLA), the original governing body of powerlifting in the UK since the inception of the sport.
BWLA (then BAWLA) was a founder member of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) in 1973 and of the European Powerlifting Federation (EPF) the following year."
They have just devolved the PL arm of BWLA and called it the GBPF (only happened this year); which they were talking about back when I was doing BAWLA meets in 94-95, but have finally done.Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!
The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.

Bumpin an old thread but it's exactly what I'm looking for.
I will be moving to the Oxford area later this year and was really hoping to find a good powerlifting gym. Can you guys recommend a few? I will be right near croughton to be exact.
Edit: I've tried google mapping a few to find close ones, but man there are a lot on that list and I don't recognize any of the cities, haha.Excellence is the result of Caring more than others think is Wise; Risking more than others think is Safe. I'm guessing you will be driving quite a bit (by our standards).. Croughton is 35 mins away from Oxford on google maps and TBH I've never heard of anything in Croughton at all. Oxford university has a pretty good powerlifting team as Uni teams go and I can do some asking around to see if I can find out where they train. The closest places I know of are No Limits Gym in Rugby and Better Bodies in Northampton. Better Bodies is a little closer but I don't like it. No Limits has pretty bad opening hours but better equipment and atmosphere. Both are pretty far. The closest gym I would actually recommend is Fitness Factory in Coventry which is getting on the silly side in terms of distance. You're probably best off finding out where the Uni guys train or getting lucky and finding a gym I don't know about. Or move to a part of the country which is actually near stuff.

Thanks guys. I got to visit for a few days and the drive seemed like it was around 30 min to oxford from where we were.
Right now my commute is an hour 1 way to work. Over there my commute will be about 5 minutes to work. So I won't mind driving a little bit if I can find a nice place.
Right now I'm lifting at a gym in a warehouse, and it is really awesome. I'm getting used to it now and not looking forward to going back to a commercial gym. They don't have a website yet but here is their ******** page: http://www.********.com/pages/Aggres...00206470052525
Anyway, thanks for lookin out guys!Excellence is the result of Caring more than others think is Wise; Risking more than others think is Safe. Dreaming more than others think is Practical and Expecting more than others think is Possible.

Agreed, geared competition would require an extra effort. I am totally against gear, but have a lot of respect for the poundages people put up using gear. I'm hardcore to the RAW....ok ok that was totally lame....I shall shutup now!
Gadammit! I am guessing it is a capital city and you obviously traveled there after work ie. rush hour. Horrible feeling, but I expect you used it as a positive, put on some AC/DC real loud during the drive and pumped yourself up. Pre workout supplements eat your heart out! Literally! loool
Yes you gotto do what you gotto do to be jacked up. The tan well hahahah I don't know bro!
BTW guys, I train at home (Yes I am a foreveralone.jpg)

BIG EDIT: I just realised this thread was bumped by a 1-post guy advertising his gym and didn't look at the date of the thread. I am still leaving my post as it could help some other guys in the UK. Cheers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Finding a decent gym in London is almost an art. Most places cater to pretty City boys who are either to busy looking at themselves in the mirror doing their curls or think they are Olympic athletes doing Crossfit.
I have trained in Crystal Palace and I can confirm it was BAWLA only (this was a few years ago though). The fee was hilariously low, something like 45 pounds for a year and one of the coaches (top guy) was kind enough to give me the keys to the place to train whenever I wanted to. I shed a man tear when he gave me the key to the gym.
I can also confirm:
- Oxford Uni (have trained there for something like 4 pounds although I went in with a member). Very small room though.
- Hercules gym in Dublin. You have to be a member last I was there but it is cheap. I think you can do a one-time fee session but the following sessions you have to be a member. Nice guys and plenty of equipment, they renovated the place in 2009.
You can also add in for the Surrey guys:
- Unisport (University of Surrey campus, Guildford). Haven't been there in ages but had decent equipment and you could use chalk. Powercage included but the place gets packed with frat boys and hip hop wannabes (think a pack of 5, wearing hoodies and blasting 50cent from their phones, hugging the bench press like they own it). Has Olympic size barbell and plates, many years ago some strong guys used to train there and bought the equipment themselves, or so the story goes.
- There is also a place in Woking. It has an Olympic weightlifting team and I hear you could just go in and powerlift. I tried to quickly Google it, I think it is
Woking Powerlifting Club
WALTON ROAD
WOKING
SURREY
http://www.gbpfsoutheast.co.uk/wheretotrain.html
I have been in a few other obscure gyms in the UK but those are the ones off the bat.
All the best.

Wow this list is awesome. I see that it's kind of old but I am going to start googling those locations tomorrow to see if any are pretty close to me.
I am new to the UK and live in Adderbury near Banbury, close to Oxford. Anyone off-hand know if I am close to any of those?Excellence is the result of Caring more than others think is Wise; Risking more than others think is Safe.
