I decided to pursue PA school as opposed to med school. Im in the process of interviewing right now (had an interview friday, another on tuesday). Extremely competitive though, the average class size is 20-40 students, and schools are receiving over 1000 applications.
At the school I interviewed at on friday, every student there had over a 3.9 gpa, several years of work experience in the medical field, a strong GRE score, etc.

I just started my 2nd year at Pitt med school. I already had a Ph.D. in Microbiology/Virology so it made it really easy to get in. Actually getting paid 60,000/yr to do Virology research while I'm here, so it's not a bad deal.

strong minimum of 4-6 years for Ph D, then another minimum of 7 years (9+ for legit specialties) before you are done with all of your grad school...
It is actually getting less competitive to get into med school today for many reasons.
1) new med schools popping up at crazy rates
2) increased class sizes of med schools
3) fewer people going into medicine because it isn't as profitable as it used to be
4) More people applying to PA school as opposed to med school

Yeah, you will be in school and residency for a long time. I did it wrong, I got a Ph.D first, then decided to go to med school. I don't need to go to med school, but I wanted to open avenues to other things and get the M.D. I don't know what i'm going to specialize in yet, but I know that i can be a pathologist with only 1 year of residency because of my previous Ph.D. I am thinking of doing general surgery though. I'll be out of residency when I'm 34 if I do gen. surgery.

Believe it or not, there is still a good deal of competition.
For other poster, Canadian schools (Ontario), and GPA is >3.70, awaiting MCAT scores, but medical applications will be going out before the marks come in. October 1 deadline for the applications.

Never said it wasn't hard, but easier than in the past due to the reasons I mentioned. Its hard to get into specialties, anyone with a pulse can go into family practice if they want...

Family medicine has been getting a bad rap, but it is a very important specialty.

Pretty much the same way. Medicine is a graduate degree here, 5 years long. Your residency is worked into those 5 years. Then you can go further and specialise in a specific field or surgery. You take a test similar to mcat to apply.
I have a bachelors in med sci and in graduate pharmacology now studying stuff like pharmacodynamics, and current pharmacological research into things like reverse transcriptase inhibition and signal transduction stuff. Grad school is constant difficult work and assignment ass rape, so i hope its worth the payoff.

Ahh I love the USA for this. 6 year Doctor of Pharmacy program here. I'm in my 5th year, and I can't wait to get out. This year is ridiculous already.

I would really like a Phd, not only because having the title of 'Dr Wildphucker' would be awesome, it'd also mean I'm the world expert in a specific area and a true indicator of intelligence, plus I'd be the first in my family ever to have one. But, how useful is it apart from a personal satisfaction standpoint? Theses are long and arduous, so I'd have to be certain its worth it from a career point of view. A Phd just for the sake of saying you have a Phd, is not entirely worth it in my opinion.
And to DrV, howd you get into a doctorate program in your teens? Were you significantly more advanced than your cohort?
