Anyone else notice this?
Just today I saw students texting one another when they were sitting a few desks apart during a break, when they were easily within speaking distance. What are they saying in texts that they can't say to one another in person? I see this all the time.
I'm not just singling out teens, I feel like our whole world is becoming a bit too technology dependent and things like texting is going to hinder the next generation's social abilities. But parents of teens, and even younger kids, are not helping. I've seen 10 year old kids with phones and texting people, and whenever I see something like that I wonder what their parents are thinking.
Maybe I'm just being a bit paranoid, but I feel like parents should know better than to allow kids to be so dependent on texting as one of their main forms of communication.
Every time I see teenagers in class ignoring the outside world in general, or at a restaurant ignoring their parents and just texting on their phones, I worry that the vast majority of the next generation will end up with no social skills whatsoever.

Yeah i agree with you, there's not enough face to face contact nowadays, what would kids do if the cellphones disappeared from the earth's surface for a couple days? Someone could make a cool experiment like that haha.

Its a trade off. Shy people are able to talk more and socialize more with people they normally wouldn't. MySpace and ******** and opened up venues to shy and introverted people. On the other hand, yes it hinders actual one on one social interaction, but at what cost? I am not shy and am usually very outgoing. Texting, MySpace, and ******** have just added to my socializing abilities rather than hindering them in any way.

One would say check your phone for my text, then the other laughed and then he started texting something into his phone, and then told the other to check his.
This went on for a few minutes.
Another thing I see is when students just sit in groups for lunch or breaks during class, and are just texting on their phones instead of talking to one another.

fukin a, i remember the good ol' days of actually going outside, and that I had to use landlines to call friends to organize pick-up sports and night games. still have all my old friends' home numbers memorized!
miss it dearly. although, I do love to text, I still prefer actual face-to-face interaction.
sexting is fun, but will never take place of actual sex. get it?

I've noticed it's hard for a lot of people to sit through a 50 minute class without checking their phone every few minutes. Then they turn their phone on vibrate so it doesn't ring but instead is constantly vibrating against the table/chair.

I was at a Shelby car show, and observed a bunch of little kids wandering around and ignoring the cars, instead they were texting on their Sidekicks. It's sad, really. I text some people as a quick way to get a hold of them, but I don't do it ad nauseaum like everyone else at my school/a growing number of people in my hometown.
