Made these out of a battery box strap two years ago. Been using them ever since without any problem.
I just cut the strap in two and sewed a loop in the end of each one. I routinely use them for shrugs with excess of 350lbs.
When I first posted these last year, I had a guy tell me they would cut into my wrists/hands with the heavy stuff, but until I get to the really heavy stuff, they will work just fine.

I have a pair of straps I made from seatbelts. Rippetoe had this in the book as an idea but I had already made them. I think that they really dig in your hands though with heavy weight. Most nylon straps will. I also have two pairs from APT and one of them is nylon and the other is thick cotton. I like the cotton alot better since they don't cut off my circulation.

You dont even need the loop at one end.
Go to walmart and go to the fabric department. You will find cotton strapping, sort of like the stuff web belts are made out of.
Get about 4 feet of it.
Now, take a 2 foot piece and fold it in half. where the loop part is where your wrist goes. The long strap parts go forwrad through your palms.
Wrap around bar and pull away.
Costs about $4 tops."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

It seems more work to try and build them yourself. I picked up a set for $12 bucks.
