Wai Kru and Muay Thai.
I have a longer break between my last MMA fight and my next, so i decided to take on an amatuer muay thai fight to keep from getting bored. Its a relatively small show compared to what i'm used to and it is my first thai boxing fight.
I have trained thai boxing for almost 3 years now but i only do it as my main stand up for my mma fights. I've never dealt with a Wai Kru before, I dont train the the style strict enough in the sense that i've never had to think about this tradition, but i also dont want to be disrespectful or look like an idiot.
For those who have had muay thai fights, if you didnt train in the most traditional sense what can you offer in terms of how to conduct myself during the wai kru?

each gym will have its own wai kru, you have the option of doing it, if you wish, but it is not necessary

If you don't have a Wai Kru just stand in your corner. If your opponent does one and walks the corners, take a step forward and let him pass.

These if you are uncomfortable with it. Now a days, with so many mma gyms teaching muay Thai, not everyone that comes to fight knows the wai Kru. You could show extra respect by standing with hands in wai and head bowed while you opponent does the ceremony.

or this (which I recommend because it is a very tradition heavy sport and the basic version is fairly easy to learn). If you're near Pasadena, CA go to Sityodtong (Kru Michaelowski) on a Sat and he's usually teaching it. Many fighters that don't get training in it go to him to learn (plus it gives you some extra connections in the mt world).
Here's some links I found:
http://video.google.com/videosearch?...8&sa=N&tab=wv#
My favorite version of the wai Kru is the one the little country Kru taught Doug. Too funny, and it takes balls to act like you're putting on make up during the ceremony. Serious style points lol.
PM if you need more help braddah norAA

Thank you!

a lot of it differs from gym to gym, but if you really want to do one, a simplyfied version would be to seal the ring; walk round slowly, anticlockwise with your hand on the top rope....lightly brush your right foot along the floor, almost as if you were sweeping away leaves. when you get to each corner, bow with hands against the head to the top of the corner, and "draw" three dots - top to bottom - on the cushion then sweep your hand through the dots leaving your hand in the air...once youve done all four corners, you have sealed the ring from evil spirits and bad luck.
at this point you may pace the floor in front of your own corner and get onto your knees, facing your corner. keep your hands on your forehead in the wai pose, and place the hands one after the other on the floor, and rest your head on top of them in a bow. do this three times, in recognition of your parents, your trainers and whatever god or gods you may pray to. once youve done this, raise to your feet, turn round and bow to your opponents corner.
that much is the wai kru....the ram muay is pretty much specific to each gym, and sometimes to each fighter....only your trainer should really show you that part.

I trained with a former Lumpini Stadium champ. He taught guys the Wai Kru he used, if they wanted to learn it. He did not care if they didn't, he only asked if your opponent did it and wanted in your corner you politely moved out of his way.

Just seal the ring and pay your respects in each corner that should show your respectful of the thai culture and the sport itself you don't need to get into a full blown wai kru if its just an amatuer fight and your actually and MMA fighter.

Btw gl in your fight man, If anything be warey of not going out hard enough because amatuer muay thai fights are short and sharp and with your level of conditioning from MMA you may try to slot into things slowly and find your groove and before you know it fight will be over!

thanks for the words of wisdom
i'm excited to have little, to no pressure on me during a fight. i took this fight on as a small challenge to get me out of my normal "comfort" zone in terms of fighting. I'm so used to the nerves building up from my mma fights that this a nice change of pace going back into a small ammy show. I'm sure tho, with my competitive nature, my nerves will still be up slightly right before the fight.
I'll post back up in this thread after my fight is over next weekend

Yeah I would strongly recommend you learn the Wai Kru. I've competed in a few shows now and the guys who dont do it are generally frowned upon. For me performing the dance is more nerve wrecking than the fight itself cos it just feels unnatural. But I know its tradition and dont really wanna piss off a room full ofMuay Thai fighters

Are you fighting here in Texas by any chance? You can learn a simple generic one that isnt based on any other Kru's wai kru.

No prob, I think they would appreciate the attempt actually, especially since it would be easier to not do it.

i forgot to mention that it went all 3 rounds. I kept knocking him down but he just wouldnt stay down despite all my flush hits. I missed my mma gloves haha. I won each round with a score of 10-8. I went with a small amateur show but i guess i could have gone with a slightly larger venue. I didnt recieve any damage which is good, but i was kinda hoping to learn from this event. oh well
