I just got back from the gym. I am pretty much a beginner and I was doing dead lifts when I guy comes over and tells me I am doing it wrong. I am pretty much grateful whenever someone is willing to give me advice so I am kinda glad he seen the problem. Anyways he was saying when you do traditional dead you basically want to make your shins bleed. You want to move the bar up and down as close to your body as you can. He also said to let my arms down all the way the whole time. I was just wondering if his advice was good or not, I thought it was because the exercise seemed a lot easier to do.

Yes, arms are merely holding the bar, nothing else. Straight down.
You do not need to filet your shins, however the bar is to remain in contact with your leg throughout the lift.
Many people do scrape their shins, and bleed. I tend to wear long socks and pants when I do deadlifts.

Well you dont have to make your shins bleed but the part about keeping the bar as close to your body as possible is definately true.
If you wear trackpants when deadlifting and your still finding that your cutting your knees well then if that means keeping the bar close to your body to prevent back injuries and risk getting a few cuts then so be it.~~~~~~~~~~

Bar should be as close to your legs as possible (real men do barbell hacksquats), but wear some long socks or track pants. There's enough damn diseases floating around, shouldn't have to worry over if some douch-bag bled on the bar before I used it.

I wear my knee sleeves pulled down over my shins.
Has anyone here used an Okie DL bar? I doubt it... but they have the sickest knurling of any bar I've used. My shins used to bleed so bad my training partners would make me pack the bloody holes with chalk lol. Not the smartest or most hygienic thing to do, but it kept me from bleeding on the bar."Strong people are harder to kill than weak people, and more useful in general."

yes, the bar should be "guided" in it's travel up the shins, not as a cheese grader. ask yourself, "would i use this bloody bar from the last guy doing dl, knowing i might split my shins open therefore, allowing whatever blood that remained from the last person dig into my open flesh allowing for unwarrented and unsanitary blood transfusion and any virulent or bacterial agents to enter my circulation via my shin meats?"
ask yourself that.Last edited by mybody001; 09-15-2009 at 01:43 PM.
